As for upgrading, there's really only two interesting questions:
1) Do you need it?
2) Can you spare the cash?
If you answer yes to both, then avoiding an upgrade is irrational. ;)
I am currently running two GTX 780 Ti in SLI and play at 2560x1440. Most games can run fun at max settings, but sometimes the framerates drop (Witcher 3 is one such example).
So on one hand a GTX 1080 is an upgrade for sure. On the other hand, I can probably last just fine until the Ti version comes out.
