At least that was something different and GOG was experimenting with sales formats. Now we have the same sale with the same games and discounts four times a year.

Leroux: The appeal of flash sales were the extraordinarily high discounts that publishers would be willing to offer only because of the short time windows. But I don't see that happening anymore. These days high discounts are mostly reserved for those older or less popular games that everyone already owns or never planned to buy in the first place.

And if you look at it rationally, the time spent on trying to get good deals during these sales is probably worth more than the few dollars you manage to save by that. But maybe the appeal of flash sales is also that you don't have much time to think about it rationally and therefor you don't need to come up with any other reason to justify your purchase than "but time is running out!". ;)
The Insomnia deals weren't time-limited, you may recall, but quantity-limited. This, in turn, could severely limit the time each deal was up for...though not always. =P

Ah, true, but it doesn't matter, the idea is similar, in that the offer is limited and you have to decide quickly if it's anywhere near a good offer.

hedwards: Not enough people complaining, really.

They were a pretty resounding fuck you to people who have jobs, especially that first one where the only games I might have been interested in were at the very start of the promo when any reasonable person would have still been in bed.

A bloody stupid promo and particularly exploitative.
They ran for three cycles, repeating the promos three times. I have a job too, and a full time one at that.
But I was still able to get a lot of good games from that. Those I couldn't be around to grab, I made nice buddies in the chat who gleefully got one code for me and I returned the favour for them.
It was a very unique experience, for me.

AB2012: I never understood the appeal of them. People who have jobs, a life, etc, end up spending less whilst GOG doesn't earn that much more from everyone else to make up for that. Everything else about them just seems like an artifical time-gated restriction which defeats the whole purpose of a sale (you lower margins in order to make more on volume, not lower them then kill off that volume by locking your customers out of your store for 5hrs 50mins out of every 6hrs...)
They built up an astounding sense of community with other people waiting, since they naturally pushed people into chatting to spend time and gather info. And most people helped each other with information, suggestions, gifts, all sorts of support.
I can recall at least 3 or 4 games i would NEVER HAVE TRIED if it weren't for people here in the community that convinced me about them, and they were AWESOME.
People bought extra copies for giveways and it was giveaway galore. Everyone got plenty of free games from generous donors.
They were a consistent part of why I came to love GOG's community.
Nowadays I barely have any reason to be writing here at all.

Caesar.: I have never been around for one. But they sound... like a nightmare.
They were actually pretty fun.
I understand they weren't perfect, but they were pretty unique and fun.
I'm not saying they should bring them back as they were, but maybe in a different, more well thought form.
Or they could do something unique anyway. Sales nowaday have very mediocre discounts and are boring AF.

My point precisely. It's BOOOOOORING.

I quite enjoyed the first Insomnia sale. I actually talked to more people than tinyE :P

After that, I just couldn't get into it. I'm just gonna chalk that up to my depression though.

Maybe one day I'll get around to playing Jack Keane 2 I bought as a favor for the community.

I might be confusing this one with the time machine one. This one was rather horrible for different reasons. Encouraging members to buy games just to avoid being Keaned and the free games that were up for such a short period of time that if you weren't in the right place, you wouldn't have any hope of scoring one as by the time you got a chance to click the free copies were already gone.

Gog has done some interesting games over the years, but this one was just exploitative.
I actually don't mind them either. I just wish they would have them during the weekends, rather than mostly week long sales during work days, you know like when most of us have to go to either school or work. It's not easy for most of us to glue ourselves to our chairs and live on caffeine for days on end so we won't miss that scrolling sales ticker.

Then again, I'm just kinda sales fatigued anyway. Rather than constant 10-20% sales on current catalogs, I'd much rather seen new banners on the front page offering even more new games from even more publishers. There's only so many endless Interplay and Kalypso sales we can stomach. I'd gladly trade in some awesome deals in exchange for Endless Space, Borderlands, Mass Effect, or Crusader Kings II gog releases.

Yeah, doing them during the weekend would have been a great improvement.
