Tormentfan: I still wouldn't say that heated religious 'debate' is any more prevalent than everyday bitching, in fact, tbh, I see it as a very small part of the overall immaturity (of which I can certainly be guilty of) that contaminates forum in general.
It's as if all the etiquette and social manners, we as a species, evolved over thousands of years, were all suddenly dropped down the toilet since the advent of the internet... and it's just going to get worse, unfettered humanity never improves on it's own.. it has to be guided, sometimes forcefully, and there's no one left to do that.
1. Sometimes people need a place to vent and act "immature" from time to time. I agree there are places for that online, but disagree that it's always(or nearly so) a bad thing when done online or off. It can be very healthy and/or fun sometimes, if done right and in the proper places.
2. The entirety of manners and etiquette has vanished since the internet was invented? Maybe it contributed to the lessening of such in some people at some point in their lives, for good or bad reasons & in good or bad ways, but I don't think it obliterated such from the face of the planet for everyone everywhere.
3. I also don't think the net(as a whole) should be regulated(dunno if that's what you were getting at there, that we should do that or that the net needed such to remove the immaturity)....we have enough regulated(self regulated) areas of the net to safe haven in already for people of all creeds/sexes/faiths/personalities/etc, imo.
iainmet: I think as the forum continues to grow and GoG gets bigger they may need to start looking at a few moderators to keep an eye on the forum.
Dump / delete threads like the one yesterday that was saying Pirate all 3 Mass Effect Games for example, remove inflamatory remarks from threads to stop bickering etc.
I, for one, think that would be a bad idea. What would keep a moderator from becoming "Power hungry" and deleting things that they disliked or interpreting the forum code in their own misguided way?
Also imo deleting threads(instead of locking) even bad ones is censorship, plain and simple. Yes, GOG(and forums) isn't(aren't) a democracy, but censorship shouldn't be the answer in any but the most dire circumstances, and often can be done for bad reasons and used to bad effect once it is used for good reasons and to good effect online.
