We've probably all had the experience of dabbling with a game as a kid, enjoying it, but never getting right the way through. What are some of the games that GOG has inspired you to finish? Did they live up to expectations? Exceed them?

For me, System Shock 2 is the most notable. I played it when I was a kid, but it was a little too complex and a little too scary for me to get all that far through. But when it came up on GOG I made my mind up to give it a proper go. And it was definitely worth it, now ranking as one of my all time favourite gaming experiences.

On a side note. I have a similar interest in Planescape: Torment. I played all the other infinity engine games and aside from IWD2 they are some of my favourite games ever. But the reason I haven't played PS:T is because it seems to have the most annoying fanbase of any game I know. Every time I read a thread about PS:T, someone will be sure to denounce BG2 as 'poorly written' or 'generic fantasy'. This doesn't inspire me to play PS:T, it makes me think it's a game elitists enjoy.

I have two questions:
1) Can I enjoy Planescape as a fun game with a good story, without sitting there feeling superior to everyone else?
2) How much dialogue is voiced?
1: I really enjoyed PS:T and I don't think I sat there feeling superior, it's not a game which you sit there thinking "Oh the masses wouldn't enjoy this" sipping at whiskey.
The main difference I would say is that your character has a very strong back story, and you are trying to unravel it, so in that way it is more (back)story driven than BG as there you are creating the most import part of your character story.
If that makes sense

2: I think almost none is (people correct me if I'm wrong, as I remember stuff I read in the voices of the characters)

I personally enjoyed it more than BG, but that's just a personal view point. I do think if you enjoy a well written story driven game this is one of the best.

1.) Sure you can. Just be sure to invest in Intelligence and Wisdom to get more out of the story.
2.) A few key scenes and some party banter. Not much all around. Seems weird that they got established TV actors like Mitch Pileggi or John DeLancie for small jobs like that. >_>
Connect Four.

Previously I always got frustrated around checker #3 and gave up.

Oh, btw, GOG got me to finish HOMM 3 (Restoration of Erathia) fifteen years after the fact. :) Still got Armageddon's Blade, though, and that's gonna be a tough nut to crack given how hard that can be. >_>
Hehehe, cult games can have rapid fanbases. As for your questions:

1) Sure you can. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but assuming you liked the rest of the Infinity Engine games, I personally think that you will like this. It sure can feel kinda limited what with only 3 classes and no choice of races, but it sure as hell has a wacky setting.
2) Not much. Only important scenes and some party talk.

As for my experience, I would say the Earthworm Jim games. I always used to play them over 15 years ago on the PC/Mega Drive/SNES but never got the chance to finish them. With GOG.com, I finally did it.

Betrayal at Krondor. I owned the game when it was first released but never got beyond the midway point. My enjoyment of the game actually decreased as I played more. Don't get me wrong, it is a good game and the writing is great, but I did not like how the game handles the characters/party. If the party was handled the traditional way, I think it would have been better.

Interesting question. I checked the list of my GOG games, and oddly enough, I didn't find a single one that I _finished_ because of GOG. Usually I either buy games on GOG because I never played them before, or because I want a digital backup (but I usually finished those already). I did find 4 games in my collection that I _could_ finish now since I own them on GOG, but so far, playing the ones I never had before seems more compelling.

Well, BG2 _is_ generic fantasy. I actually tried to play it right after having finished Planescape: Torment and just ... couldn't. It felt totally bland and generic.

I don't know if that makes me an "elitist". I prefer to think that it doesn't. Actually I don't even see me as part of a "fanbase". I just liked Planescape: Torment very much because it had excellent writing, very original characters, an unusual setting, and a great plot that touched me very deeply. And unfortunately, when I played Baldur's Gate, it fell flat on each of these accounts. That doesn't mean that I regard Baldur's Gate as a bad game (I don't think it is), it just doesn't cater as much to my preferences (which Planescape did uncannily well). It also certainly doesn't make me feel "superior" to people who like Baldur's Gate. It just describes honestly how I felt after playing one game and then starting the other.

But in any case, how some perceived fandom feels about a game really shouldn't affect your decision to play it or not. If you think that you might like the game, play it. If not, don't. If I allowed fandom behavior to influence the selection of the games I play, I would've never played Fallout 1+2 (the hatred of parts of these games' fandom towards Fallout 3 can be hard to stomach), and that would've been silly.

I think "Planescape: Torment" is worth a shot. Whether or not you'll feel "superior" while playing it is for you to decide, I can't really tell. I think I never felt that way towards others in any game I played, and the concept is so alien to me that I frankly wonder how the idea of feeling superior while playing a game would even enter someone's mind or prevent someone from playing, but hey, I don't have to understand everything. ;)

Regarding your second question: There is very little voice acting in P:T, but the little that's there is very well done. I'd suggest installing a popular mod that fixes some bugs and increases the frequency of the voiced party banter as well.
