American McGee's Alice (2000)

by Rogue Entertainment, Westlake Interactive, Aspyr Media, Electronic Arts
Genres:Adventure, Platform, Puzzle
Themes:Action, Horror
Game modes:Single player
Story:Shortly after her second adventure, Through the Looking-Glass, Alice's house is burnt down by an accidental fire, killing her family and leaving her as the only survivor. As time progresses Alice loses touch with reality. She is institutionalized in Rutledge Asylum, where she is observed and treated by Dr. Heironymous Wilson. Alice's only possession in Rutledge is a stuffed rabbit. Ten years after Alice was committed to Rutledge, she finds herself sucked back into a Wonderland that has been twisted by her own broken mind. The White Rabbit summons Alice to aid a radically altered Wonderland, which became a twisted version of itself as it came under the horrible rule of the Queen of Hearts. The Cheshire Cat serves as Alice's companion throughout the game, frequently appearing to guide her with cryptic comments.Show more

This game introduced me to the world of twisted & dark fairy tales. The story, the setting, the gameplay, the art style, the soundtrack - all incredible, especially for its time. I'd love to see this game, and its sequel, preserved DRM-FREE. If possible, I'd love to see an art book and the soundtrack being sold alongside the game!
It's a shame that we won't be able to enjoy a conclusion to this trilogy (the design bible for the third game is available on McGee's socials, so you can read the planned ending), but it's a bigger shame that the game that started it all has been left to rot. Please, consider supporting the restoration of one of the greatest dark adventure games out there, the conjunction of mind bending and gothic imagery is yet unmatched, the writing is superb, and the experience simply magical. Come down the rabbit hole.

I graduated HS with the guy who created the soundtrack, Chris Vrenna formerly of NIN. Bought the disc when the game hit the shelf! The game itself is glitchy and needs some work, BUT the soundtrack is fantastic and worth the price, IMO.
This game, and its sequel, is one that's always meant a lot to me. It came out the same year as I was born, but I discovered it when I was young, and was obsessed ever since. It is a genuinely impressive piece of passionate artistry and risk that you just don't see triple A companies putting out anymore. It's a dark, but sympathetic look at a young, traumatized girl desperately trying to come to terms with her past and save herself from self-annihilation. (Making it far more than just a run-of-the-mill 'dark and edgy' fairy tale/Alice adaptation--there is genuine love and hope in this game). The art direction and music are absolutely beautiful and creatively unhinged, and the gameplay still manages to hold up decently well. I love this game with all my heart, and have always wanted to see it become more accessible to everyone else so that they can love it too.

I didn't play this game until well after it's release, and accessing it on modern platforms is more hassle than it should be (you basically have to buy the sequel and use external patches to access Alice 1 on its own - and that's just for PC players). This game has an incredible mood - gorgeously macabre scenery, a beautifully creepy soundtrack, and characters with poetic wit that's a breath of fresh air from modern quipping protagonists. It's a real gem of its time, and absolutely deserves to be properly preserved.
I finished the sequel (Alice: Madness Returns) to this game last year (2024) and I have never played the first. The second was awesome and I would love to play the first!

What to say about Alice, plenty of Alice's in my life, but Alice Liddell takes the soft spot, what a game what a story, never understood why this game tends to disappear from a best of the best games list, to good to be vapourware.

Just yesterday, I realized there is only part two on Steam and GOG. I already own the game in box, there are online guides to kinda make it work on modern systems but I still can't buy this classic in digital? Heresy! Please bring this hidden gem back, be persisent with EA, reach American James McGee if needed but make it happen!

Bubble Seahorse Adventure
Bubble Seahorse AdventureBubble Seahorse Adventures began its life in 2007, when a collective of developers calling themselves The Old Battleaxe decided to enter the PyWeek game jam. The game was originally known as Barbie Seahorse Adventures, before temporarily being renamed Bubble Kong for its submission to PyWeek. After the game jam, Hassey and company decided to polish up the game with, in Hassey’s words, “a bazillion bug fixes, about 10 new levels and all the lousy levels removed” to create a release initially known as Bubble Kong Deluxe before switching back to Barbie Seahorse Adventures.

Shin Megami Tensei II
Shin Megami Tensei IIFifty years have passed since the hero of Shin Megami Tensei followed the neutral path, defeated the leaders of Law and Chaos, and founded a state where followers of both ideologies could live freely. But his reign of freedom doesn't last long. The Messian faith gains power, expanding the Cathedral into a new enclosed environment named Tokyo Millennium. The Gaians rise up, but their rebellion is repressed by the Messians' elite warrior class, the Temple Knights. People flock into the encapsulated city, submitting themselves to the strict hierarchy imposed by the Messian Center, where only the privileged living in the Center district are safe from demonic assaults. A few years later, a retired arena fighter Okamoto rescues a man named Hawk, who was fighting for his life against a demon. He trains him to fight in the arena of the Valhalla district, hoping that he would win the tournament, which will grant them both citizenship in the Center district. When Hawk succeeds, he is brought before a Messian bishop, and learns the shocking truth about his own origins and the role he is supposed to play in the grand scheme of events. A new battle for a better future begins. Shin Megami Tensei II retains all the gameplay features of the previous game. The player is able to summon demons, fuse them to create more powerful ones, make them participate in battles, talk to random enemies and receive information from them, etc. The combat is turn-based, and the player explores the complex, maze-like dungeons from a first-person perspective view. Like in the first game, the Law, Chaos, and Neutral alignments play an important role: during the course of the game, the player will have to make choices that influence the alignment of the protagonist, steering the storyline into different directions. New features include a "magic succession" system, which allows demons to carry over their original magic spells when they are fused into new ones, a few additional spells and abilities, and the possibility to play at the casino and win unique items.

Radical Dreamers: Le Trésor Interdit
Radical Dreamers: Le Trésor InterditRadical Dreamers is the little-known sequel to the popular and critically acclaimed Chrono Trigger. Unlike Chrono Trigger and the other games in the Chrono series, Radical Dreamers is a menu-driven text adventure/visual novel, with sparse visuals and atmospheric music. The game was released only in Japan for the Super Famicom's Satellaview satellite radio service. In this game, three thieves - Kid, a young girl famous for her age, Magil, a mysterious wizard with an unknown past, and Serge, a rather cowardly young man - head to Lord Lynx's manor to steal the Frozen Flame, a legendary jewel. But Kid's not just there for the jewel - she has a personal vendetta against Lynx. Many elements from this game were carried over to Chrono Cross, including characters, music, and parts of the story. In fact, Chrono Cross implies Radical Dreamers takes place in one of many alternate versions of the main game world. The game was later localized and bundled in the remaster Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, under the newly localized title of "Radical Dreamers: Le Trésor Interdit".
