With its brutal gameplay, medieval setting, and gritty tone, it serves as both a fresh take on the DOOM universe and a return to its raw, hellish roots. A game this bold and stylistically distinct deserves to be preserved and celebrated on a DRM-free platform like GOG. GOG has become a haven for fans of classic and modern PC gaming alike, prioritizing ownership, preservation, and player freedom. DOOM is a cornerstone of PC gaming history, and each new title in the series carries that legacy. By releasing The Dark Ages on GOG, id Software and Bethesda would be giving fans the ability to truly own the game—no launchers, no DRM, just pure DOOM. Given that GOG already supports many entries in the DOOM franchise—DOOM 1, 2, 3, 64, and DOOM (2016)—it makes perfect sense to continue the tradition. With its mix of close-range combat, dark fantasy vibes, and a heavier focus on lore and world-building, The Dark Ages could attract both long-time DOOM fans and newcomers.
