One of the first games I ever played, and a damn good one. By todays standards it wouldn't be all that, but the atmosphere of old sim games is delicious and Heavy Gear 1 is no exception. Built off the foundation of Activisions' Mechwarrior 2 engine, this game has a lot of its own flair and flavour to differentiate it. FMV cutscenes for plot and some pretty decent voice acting compared to today's efforts. With some tweaking of controls this one is a must-play for mech sim enthusiasts. This should be on GOG as the community repacks, while awesome (thanks mr wholesome) aren't the same as a re-release for modern systems. Please Mr GOG Santa, make this happen!

Found it unexpectedly at a Sam's Club back in the 90s and was immediately hooked. It was my favorite game at the time and still one of my top games. I'd also like to see its sequel added as well. Give it the Dino Crisis 1+2 treatment and give us a Heavy Gear 1+2 release please!

This was a great counter-point to the combat in other popular mech games of the time like Mechwarrior 2 and Earthsiege. Gears (the mechs in this game line) are much smaller, and can move more quickly due to a wheeled secondary movement system. The game featured live-action cut scenes that focused on the North vs. South factions of Terra Nova, as well as a challenging campaign. This game, to my memory, stayed pretty close to the setting established by the publisher of the tabletop game, Dream Pod 9. Dream Pod 9, by the way, almost lost the license to their own game due to the predatory wording of the deal they had with Activision.
Love this mech game. Much like mechwarrior and battletech. Build your own mechs. Customize load outs and missions are great challenges. Squad of gears. I played both 1 and 2. Both titles are great mech games, I have been looking for both 1 and 2.
This was a precious birthday gift. My friends and I played this for hours every day. It would be interesting to play a deep and intricate mech game with an adult brain. Childhood was basically build a slow artillery platform and fire all as soon as I saw something.

Manhunt
ManhuntManhunt is a third-person stealth horror game. The game consists of twenty levels, and four bonus levels that can be unlocked; the levels are referred to as "scenes". Players survive the Scenes by dispatching enemy gang members known as "Hunters", occasionally with firearms but primarily by stealthily executing them in gruesome, over-the-top ways. The player is rated at the end of each level, primarily dependent on the gruesomeness of the killings and the speed of completion, from one (unimpressive) to five (extremely competent) stars. Executions are preferred in order to gain a higher score, thus encouraging players to play as viscerally as possible. The game's locales are full of "dark spots" and shadows where the player can hide while being chased by the Hunters; hiding in these dark areas makes the player invisible to opponents.

Freelancer
FreelancerEight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival. Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed. The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo. As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity. Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control. There can be tenuous peace between colonies' political agendas, but the grabs for holdings constantly unsettle the volatile frontier.

The player must retrieve a bomb that the operatives have placed inside the bunker and place it outside the door of the room where Hitler is holding his meeting, a scenario bearing a passing resemblance to the July 20 plot.

Shadow the Hedgehog
Shadow the HedgehogThe world is in peril as forces, both good and evil, make a play for the powerful Chaos Emeralds. In Shadow the Hedgehog, you can control Shadow and choose which side to fight for. This 3D platformer lets you use weapons, vehicles, environmental objects, and time and space manipulation to combat your foes. Although it is a 3D platform game as with the more recent Sonic Adventure games, the game's levels each feature up to three different missions (Hero, Dark, Normal) that the player may choose to complete. The game's plot depends on which mission is completed as well as subsequent playable levels. The game stars Shadow the Hedgehog and his quest to recover his memory, a goal he has been pursuing since his debut in Sonic Adventure 2, while an evil alien race known as the Black Arms is invading the planet.

Wolfenstein 3D
Wolfenstein 3DWolfenstein 3D is a first-person shooter presented with rudimentary 3D graphics and a follow-up to the top-down infiltration game Castle Wolfenstein. The game is broken up into levels, each of which is a flat plane divided into areas and rooms by a grid-based pattern of walls and doors, all of equal height. Each level is themed after Nazi bunkers and buildings. To finish a level, the player must traverse through the area to reach an elevator. Levels are grouped together into named episodes, with the final level focusing on a boss fight with a particularly difficult enemy. While traversing the levels, the player must fight Nazi guards and soldiers, dogs, and other enemies while managing supplies of ammunition and health. While later releases of the game included the Nocturnal Missions expansion, this initial release did not.
