Heavy Gear II

Heavy Gear II (1999)

by Activision
Genres:Shooter, Simulator, Real Time Strategy (RTS), Tactical
Themes:Action, Science fiction
Game modes:Single player, Multiplayer
Story:As the leader of the special ops group Dark Talons, lead your squad mates on a series of dangerous missions as you discover the NEC plot against your homeland, Terra Nova. Operate behind enemy lines as you gather data, attack enemy camps, capture enemy leaders, take over space stations, and more. Combat happens on land, underground (huge caverns), and even in space. There are plenty of weapons to outfit your gear, even some hand-to-hand weapons. You can also add perks and flaws to further customize your gear. Stealth is a major concern in some missions. The game play feel is very different from the Mechwarrior series. Set in Dream Pod 9's Heavy Gear universe (it actually rivals the Battletech universe in complexity, though not nearly as famous), this game requires 3D accelerator with its "Dark" 3D engine. The gears are capable of very human-like movements, such as kneeling, crawling, and jumping.Show more

It's a title that really simulates the feeling of piloting a VOTOMS-style mech well. It's fun to play even in these days! Allowing more people to check out the game (and the HG series in general) would be fantastic.

I may not have been able to play either Heavy Gear OR Heavy Gear II, but any game that lets me live out my earnest dreams of being a VOTOMS pilot in a post-apocalyptic dystopia (y'all can tell VOTOMS is my favorite anime, hands down) I am more than down for, especially if GoG is actually selling the game.

a gem i found in a bargain bin one day, tho it takes a bit to learn the controls, and the map design being a bit confusing, once u got into it, it was pretty fun fighting in big mechs against little soldiers and fighting in space, choosing ur mech like some kind of rainbow 6 loadout.
Played this a lot back in the day and really loved it. Bought it from the electronics section at Wal-Mart when they sold PC CD-ROMS back then. Would love to see this series return at one point. For Peace River!

This game is really an enhanced and smoother playing version of the first Heavy Gear. While it lacks the live-action cut scenes, the CG scenes do a fantastic job of driving the story forward during a pretty pivotal piece of Heavy Gear history: the start of a new war against the New Earth Government on another planet, Caprice. In this game you can choose your squad mates, and have a more refined ability to customize your gear (the mechs in this game). One thing this game relies more on than the first is stealth, remaining hidden from the enemy is essential to passing through many missions.

I must have played hundreds of hours in this game, while the campaign as a kid was always too tough for me I simply loved making up Gears in this game and fighting against an onslaught of enemy opponents. The community repack is actually pretty decent but a modern re-release would open the door to things like Multiplayer and better support for resolutions or screen modes (borderless). I actually beat this game last year finally as an adult and while the campaign isn't quite the same as Heavy Gear 1, it was still pretty enjoyable to go through the set pieces and come out the other side. Probably not as ubiquitious as Heavy Gear 1 or Mechwarrior 2 Mercs, but it's still a damn good mech sim with enough changes to make it feel appreciably different to the last generation of sim games. I will love Mr GOG Santa forever if this pops up in store.

This game was great. Tactical squad combat with towering Gears. Honestly a squandered opportunity because it has a great UI and mechanics for controlling your mecha and to switch to an overhead view to order your squad around the map seamlessly.

To say this game was ahead of its time could be an understatement. It is a FPS mech sim that features in-depth customization with many options and limitations to consider, including concerns with stealth, with Real-Time Strategy elements in the ability to command AI teammates to perform very specific actions as part of an attack plan mid-mission, as well as ZERO-G(!) combat segments. Can't find anything remotely similar even decades later.
This was a fantastic mech game to play back in the day. A nice blend of Western and Japanese mecha action, with cool as hell weapons and story. It's a pain in the ass to get running these days, so I'd love this to be more accessible AND to compensate someone for making it accessible.
This is definitely one of the more unique mech games to be released, giving you 2 movement modes where you can roll around on essentially roller skates at high speeds to... mostly map traversal in the later missions-the opening missions are pretty simple and you have free range to play around and not worry too much about tactics, the later missions however require more finesse and tactics that the roller skate mode lacks-that being the good ol' one foot in front of the other walkin mode that gives you the magical ability to crouch or go prone to exploit the geometry and reduce your detectability at the cost of mobility. the later missions give me ghost recon vibes but with mechs the size of a Komatsu with a 20 tube rocket pack attached to their shoulders, enough grenades to make a EOD tech sweat, and a heavy duty industrial laser pointer in every hand with enough power to cut each other's limbs off a from a quarter mile away. im not sure where my dad picked this game up-i was but a wee pip-squeak when he did, but that opening and menu music still sticks with me. id love to see it on GOG, the franchise is mostly abandonware and not available for sale anywhere outside of the tabletop miniatures game that is surprisingly still active.

Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction
Mercenaries: Playground of DestructionDuring the last years of his reign, the North Korean president Choi Kim attempted a reconciliation with the country's southern neighbor, with the ultimate goal of reunification. However, his son, General Choi Song, and the military clique under his leadership, strongly disagreed with the old man's views. Eventually, Choi Song orchestrated his own father's assassination, took control of North Korea, and severed ties with the outside world. Eventually, plans of a nuclear reactor construction began to surface. China, South Korea, the Allied Nations and even the Russian Mafia sent troops to North Korea, competing for power in the troubled region. A bounty of a hundred million dollars for General Song was declared. This is where the mercenaries enter the playfield. Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction is a free-roaming war action and driving game with open-ended gameplay in a large world. The player can choose to control any of the three mercenary protagonists, each with their own strengths: North American Chris Jacobs can sustain higher damage; Jennifer Mui from Hong-Kong is proficient in stealth; Mattias Nilsson from Sweden can run faster than the others. Each of the mercenary also speaks different languages, which makes him or her more or less suitable for work with particular factions. Players have free reign of a massive landscape to take bounties on the "Deck of 52", a list of most wanted criminals in North Korea, as well as a number of factions. Four factions have moved in to take advantage of the coup for personal gains; each faction will offer the player resources such as vehicles and supplies, as well as missions that the player can use to make money off of. If the player makes a faction happy, they will offer intel on the locations of various bounties from the deck. Players have a vast array of resources available to them to get the job done. It is possible to commandeer tanks, choppers and and any other military hardware to blow up the game's destructible landscape across the North Korean countryside. Helping out various factions provides access to numerous vehicle drops, supply drops, and air strikes.

Archon II: Adept
Archon II: AdeptArchon 2 or also Adept is the successor of the successful Electronic Arts classic Archon. As already seen in Archon, an apocalyptic fight takes place in a fantasy surrounding, now not between "light" and "dark" but between "order" and "chaos". It all happens in a game area which is divided into 4 elemental layers. In the center is the earth layer, it is surrounded by the water layer and this is surrounded by the air layer. The outer layer is made of fire. Opposite to its forerunner the players start in Adept only with one magician ("Adept") per layer. All the other creatures have to be conjured in the course of the game. Evocations and other spells cost energy, which is renewed by occupying energy points on the game area with your own creatures. The more points you occupy, the more energy you get. Every side possesses 4 own elemental beings, which have a special force when they are on their corresponding layer. Moreover 4 different demons can be conjured from both sides, which can fight independently from the chosen element. Many of these creatures can use a shooting attack, but they have also lots of special attacks. When two figures meet on a field, here also the screen is zoomed and a fight for life and death starts. The winner claims the hard-fought field. Dependent on the layer you are fighting on, the battlefield has different obstacles such as slowing-down lakes, shoot destracting swirls, flame walls or simply walls ready. The only exception are the two void fields, here no terrain is used
