Kickle Cubicle

Kickle Cubicle (1990)

by Irem
Genres:Strategy, Puzzle
Story:It once was a peaceful kingdom of friendly, kind people. Unfortunately, this land didn't stay so serene as a wicked wizard king wanted everything for himself. Using his magic powers the wizard quickly overpowered the helpless people, put everybody including Princess Mira, into "dream bags", and turned the entire kingdom into a frozen wasteland. It is your job as Kickle to progress through all of the areas within each of the four lands in the country and eliminate all of the Wizard's henchmen and rescue your friends who are held captive in a dreamless sleep. Kickle Cubicle is a captivating puzzle game much on the lines of the old coin-op game Pengo. More recently though, it contains similar concepts seen in the Lolo series of NES carts where planning and strategy is more important than quick moves. Your main weapon is your 'chilling' ice breath. Breathe on the enemy and they instantly freeze! Give them a kick and they're out of your way! Clear a couple dozen mazes and you come to the end of the land you're in where you must then beat one of the Boss creatures. Throw in springs, hammers, bonus stages and secret traps and the game quickly turns into a puzzle game with levels which start easy but increase in difficulty as you get better!Show more

I remember as a kid, my mother spent countless hours playing this. After you beat the game, there are I think about 50 bonus levels. After much cussing and yelling, my mother FINALLY beat the last level, and the 'Congratulations for beating the bonus levels' screen came up. My mother stared at the screen, dumbfounded, before bellowing 'THAT'S IT?!?! AFTER ALL THAT, THAT'S ALL I GET?!?!' Much laughter was had by my sisters and me, because what could she get, really? Such great memories with this game.

Byzantine: The Betrayal
Byzantine: The BetrayalByzantine: The Betrayal is a first-person adventure game in which the player takes the role of an American journalist, summoned to the city of Istanbul by an old college friend with the promise of a once in a lifetime story. By the time the player arrives police are already on the scene, his old friend, Emre, has run away. Players must use their investigative skills in order to uncover the secret he struggled, but failed, to reveal. Failure could mean death. The game plays in a typical first-person adventure fashion, providing 360º of freedom of movement around the player, as well as the ability to look up and down. Locations are presented as static images and talking is handled similar to that in the Tex Murphy series, with live cast and photo realistic surroundings. The game incorporates details of Turkey's history, as well as that of Southeastern Europe and so the player will have to make use of an abnormal piece of technology to investigate through the past and save yourself in the present, uncovering the secrets that lie behind Emre's disappearance.

Discworld
DiscworldDiscworld is a game released for PC (subsequently Mac, and Playstation) by Teeny Weeny / Perfect 10 studios in 1995. The game was released both on floppy disk and CD-Rom. The latter featured a commentary team created of many veterans of famous Brit-Coms. This included Monty Python's Eric Idle, Radio 4's (later to be more famous) Rob Brydon, ex- Doctor Who John Pertwee, 70s pop singer Kate Robbins, and Blackadder star Tony Robinson. The game is a riff on the Discworld title 'Guards, Guards', however many elements of the text have been shifted, not least the inclusion of Rincewind as protagonist. The game featured puzzles which were considered far too difficult and obtuse for gamers of the time, but the game itself has had a lasting legacy, now being accepted into such emulators as SCUMMVM.

L.A. Noire
L.A. NoireL.A. Noire is a neo-noir detective action-adventure video game developed by Team Bondi and published by Rockstar Games. It was initially released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms on 17 May 2011; a Microsoft Windows port was later released on 8 November 2011. L.A. Noire is set in Los Angeles in 1947 and challenges the player, controlling a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer, to solve a range of cases across five divisions. Players must investigate crime scenes for clues, follow up leads, and interrogate suspects, and the player's success at these activities will impact how much of each case's story is revealed. The game draws heavily from both the plot and aesthetic elements of film noir—stylistic films made popular in the 1940s and 1950s that share similar visual styles and themes, including crime and moral ambiguity—along with drawing inspiration from real-life crimes for its in-game cases, based upon what was reported by the Los Angeles media in 1947. The game uses a distinctive colour palette, but in homage to film noir it includes the option to play the game in black and white. Various plot elements reference the major themes of detective and mobster stories such as The Naked City, Chinatown, The Untouchables, The Black Dahlia, and L.A. Confidential.
