Legend of Mana

Legend of Mana (1999)

by Square Product Development Division 2, Square
Genres:Role-playing (RPG)
Themes:Open world, Action, Fantasy, Sandbox
Game modes:Single player, Co-operative, Multiplayer
Story:While incorporating action role-playing game elements from the three games which preceded it, Legend of Mana has its own distinct style of gameplay. Most notably, it gives the player the ability to shape the game's world of Fa'Diel according to his or her desires, a system which was incorporated through the use of "artifacts," which are gained as the player progresses through the game. The player uses the artifacts to create different towns, dungeons, etc., called "Lands", to venture to and explore. This creates a non-linear gameplay, since the game is driven by a series of what would be considered side-quests in other games. Legend of Mana features three different plots which can occur simultaneously, and which do not necessarily need to be completed for the player to finish the game. Legend of Mana was a financial success in Japan. While the game garnered considerable praise for its graphics and presentation, many critics and fans were turned off by the game's lack of a main storyline.Show more

Another diamond created by squaresoft, one of the few RPG's that caught my interest and even with the language barrier i could really enjoy this game with nice animations, fun pet/golem builds, equip crafting/enhancing and nice boss fights with killer BGM.

such a great game! having a co op game in a weird way for a ps1 was fantastic! hands down i beaten the game so long time ago and still remember how everything entwine with each other how the character got to know one another each dungeon/town you leave on the map of your choosing of location was interesting. no doubt i would preserve this game if anything. i love how you can level up any weapons as long you have them equipped and start beating on monsters to level up the weapons and the character lol. every weapon was unique and everytime you level up a weapon that you have equipped gives you uniques skills that you can equip and skill slot them to the style of play you want. hands down a must try classic game. the nintendo ds version of mana games is gonna be different but with the same world and concept. fighting the same monster types in the mana series never gonna change i mean i haven't played any of the new ones after the ps2 mana game came out lol.

J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Vol II: The Two Towers
J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Vol II: The Two TowersThe gameplay is similar to that of the first game. The game is an RPG wherein the player controls multiple characters from the book. It uses a top-down perspective. The game takes place slightly before its predecessor ends: at the dark forest of Fangorn. The story splits into several journeys of different characters similar to the book, the game also switches between different controllable parties. The ultimate goal is to reach the Two Towers and destroy the One Ring.

Dungeon Master II: The Legend of Skullkeep
Dungeon Master II: The Legend of SkullkeepDungeon Master established several new standards for role playing and computer games in general. Dungeon Master was a realtime game instead of the traditional turn-based approach that was prevalent until then. Instead of using text-based commands to interact with the environment, players directly manipulated objects and the environment by clicking the mouse in the enlarged first-person view. Abstract Dungeons and Dragons style experience points and levels were eschewed in favor of a system where the characters' skills were improved directly via using them. It also introduced some novel control methods including the spell casting system, which involved learning sequences of runes which represented the form and function of a spell's effect. For example, a fireball spell was created by mixing the fire symbol with the wing symbol. This kind of attention to detail and focus on the user interface was typical of the game and helped create an often captivating sense of craft and ingenuity. Other factors in immersiveness were the then-revolutionary use of sound effects to indicate when a creature was nearby, and (primitive) dynamic lighting.

Parasite Eve II
Parasite Eve IIParasite Eve II is an action role-playing survival horror video game released exclusively for the PlayStation. The game was developed by Square and published in Japan in 1999 and in both North America and, unlike the previous game, in PAL regions in 2000. It is the sequel to Parasite Eve and the second game in the series of the same name. Parasite Eve II is set several years after the events in the original game. The protagonist from the first game, Aya Brea, also features in this game as the playable character. She becomes involved with another outbreak of Mitochondrial creatures. Gameplay diverges from the previous game: battles take place in real time and the area of action is less restrictive. The approach is more typical of traditional survival horror games, although some role-playing elements are retained.
