Killer Instinct GoldRare was a prominent second-party developer for Nintendo, and produced the Killer Instinct series exclusively for the company as their response to Mortal Kombat. Following the success of the 1995 Killer Instinct port for the Super Nintendo home console, Rare began a sequel for the same console. They transitioned development to the Nintendo 64 upon its announcement. Gold was scheduled as a launch title for the new console but was delayed until its North American release in November 1996. It received a wider release in May 1997.

The horse riding is European (aka Equestrian) style as opposed to western, although the game doesn't force the player to take that into account when they're riding. The horse is controlled with simplistic controls to make it jump, steer, and adjust speed.
After choosing a horse for Barbie, she can spend some time feeding and grooming it before saddling up and going for a ride. Riding the trails is the bulk of the gameplay. The player can race their horse against several of Barbie's friends. There are also some mini-games that the player comes across while riding. In order to open these doors, Banjo and Kazooie need to collect mysterious objects called notes, which exist within the mysterious environments.
Collecting enough of these notes will give them the power to open the magical doors.
In order to open a portal to a new environment, a jigsaw containing a picture of the environment has to be finished.
Golden Jigsaw pieces are located within previously visited worlds, and can fit any unfinished jigsaw.
