Puyo Puyo SUN

Puyo Puyo SUN (1996)

by Compile
Genres:Puzzle, Arcade
Themes:Fantasy, Comedy, Kids
Game modes:Single player, Multiplayer, Split screen
Story:Satan has enlarged the sun in a devious attempt to get a perfect tan. Arle Nadja embarks on a quest to defeat him in this competitive puzzle game. This is the 3rd installment of the Puyo Puyo games series, and the sequel to Puyo Puyo Tsu. After the highly acclaimed success of its predecessor, Compile took a slightly more retro approach, so players had a more original feel to the game over that of Tsu. The name of Puyo Puyo SUN comes from a Japanese pun on san, and also indicates a new Puyo brought into the game. As Sun Puyo were used in this game, and the game itself is not only set on a tropical beach, but is the third in the series (san (三)) is the Japanese word for the number three), the name served multiple purposes. This game was released only in Japan.Show more

Probably my favorite of the Compile-era Puyo Puyo titles. Sure, it's not as expansive or influential as Tsuu was, but it's story is charming, the spriteart is wonderful, the music is fun to listen to, and the gameplay holds up as expected from the relatively simple Puyo Puyo series. An official english translation would rule. SEGA, please...

Fraction Munchers
Fraction MunchersFraction Munchers is the second math based game in the Munchers series of educational games. Aside from the subject matter, the basic concept is the same as other games in the series. It is played on a grid where the player controls a creature called the Fraction Muncher who has to eat the numbers or fractional expressions that correspond to the statement that is written above the grid. Other creatures known as troggles roam the grid and try to get to the muncher. There are five different ones and they all have their own behaviour and movement patterns. Eating wrong answers or getting caught by a troggle leads to a life being lost. There are four different game modes which decide what kind of statements should appear: fraction types, equivalents, comparing and expression. Additionally there is a combined mode that mixes all.

Grand Prix
Grand PrixThe player drives a Formula One car in a time trial on one of four race tracks, each of which has a different difficulty level. Difficulty is gauged by the length of the course, the number of cars and oil slicks on the track, and the number of bridges to cross. The player views the race from a top-down perspective, and the screen scrolls from right to left. The player's car maneuvers only on a vertical axis, and loses a little speed when it does so. The joystick's button is the throttle: Depressing it accelerates, and releasing it decelerates. Pressing the joystick leftward applies the brake. The transmission audibly shifts as the player's car accelerates and decelerates. Grand Prix is a time trial, and the competing cars are obstacles rather than competition for the finish line. The player's car can easily outpace the other cars, but if it collides with one, its speed drops lower than that of the impacted car. Driving over an oil slick causes the player's car to skid slightly sideways, but does not slow it down. Once every scale mile, the player crosses a narrow bridge over blue water. Colliding with any wall of the bridge stops the car, and the player must slowly gain speed to continue.

Where in America's Past Is Carmen Sandiego?
Where in America's Past Is Carmen Sandiego? This game is widely considered the most informational game of the entire series. Though it may contain some minute differences from the main series, it remains true to it. This game's aim (as the others' are), is to capture Carmen's gang of thieves, one by one until all of her henchmen have been caught. This is done by searching for clues, trailing them, identifying them and finally, bringing them in for trial. After all of the henchmen have been caught, the player must then go after Carmen herself. One of the main differences is that the player can receive in-game help.
