As one of the original games of Raven Software, pre-dating even their more well-known titles such as Heretic, Shadowcaster occupies its own unique place in video gaming history. Taking the Wolfenstein 3D engine and modifying it to suit their purposes, Raven spun together a world with surprises around every corner and a wide variety of abilities, puzzle as much as action. In many ways, ShadowCaster was the game which thrust Raven into the limelight, leading directly to their acquisition later on by Activision and a long, winding course.
While it's as rough as any other game of the era by modern standards, ShadowCaster is still a very enjoyable and unique look at where it truly began for a company which endures to this day, and a perfect example of an under-appreciated title well-suited for curation!
