For me, this is one of the greatest games of the late nineties. It's got beautiful 3D underwater graphics and an inventive alternate-world atmosphere with these thumbelinae on the bottom of the ocean (well, likely more a tide pool), foraging for cigarette buds and bottle caps. The open world feels rather large for the time and the prospecting and trading reminds me of earlier titles like WC: Privateer. The controls feel suitably floaty and have this technicality to it, with your propellers being able to tilt up or down and all those gadgets you can buy and mount on your sub. The soundtrack really nails this ambiance-feel that games like DKC or SM64 have in their underwater stages. I'd be so stoked if this game came back in a readily playable state that doesn't require you to hack in some Voodoo-wrapper only to play with weird timing issues. In an alternate history where this game is a success, we could have gotten Sub Culture: Dangerous or something like it (and I still won't give up hope completely cough Nightdive cough), but I'd settle for a convenient way to play the first one. 5/5 starfish.

Sub Culture is like Privateer but underwater. It's a unique gem that is often overlooked. I highly recommend it for anyone who likes this type of genre. Could probably use a remaster too probably. Please bring this game here GOG!

Loved it from the first time I saw it as a teenager, back in the days. The gameplay was astonishing, and the idea of being a small little, yet technologicaly advanced, being with personal submarine gave youur imagination a mind blow. A true masterpiece back from the days

I played this when I was very young and have a fond memory of it despite all the problems I had back in the day to play it because was too complicated for my young self. Hope I can buy it a version compatible with modern systems to give it another chance.

This game remains my white whale when it comes to old video games I want to see re-released. I'd probably would buy it even in it's unmodified form. Surely some game developer out there remembers this game fondly enough to try and buy the rights to and re-release?

Many teenage memories with this one. Still remember the Procha and Bohine, carrying bottle caps and cigarettes across the sea floor. More people need to play this forgotten classic.

One of my first games, and an amazing experience as a child - having to use the lights when daytime switched to nighttime (and when diving to darker depths, collecting "waste" (resources), trading, and all at a miniature scale! Also, the CGI cutscenes and renderings when entering harbors put you neatly into the game world, and the music in this game - very fitting for exploration in this underwater setting, and I still listen to it sometimes to relax :) I really hope this little gem of a game can be brought back, despite being very niche - maybe even with the somewhat-spiritual successor "Deep Fighter" some day?
I love this game, the sense of exploration under the sea was amazing, also zapping fishes with your miniature submarine is always funny. This game came with an issue of Billiken compu in my country, that was a PC and gaming magazine for kids at the time.

One of My best PC games. Great story and beautiful design (good vibes when I played that game). The music is great too. Please GOG, add that gems. I'll buy!!!!

Dwarf Fortress
Dwarf FortressIn this complex construction/management/roguelike simulation, every generated world brings a unique challenge, whether it’s dwarves with their own simulated personalities or aquifers. Observe what makes your civilization fall into eventual decline, and learn for next time… until something else inevitably goes wrong. The combat model includes skills, body parts, material properties, aimed attacks, wrestling, pain, nausea, various poison effects, and much more. It’s difficult to convey the depth of the generation. Hundreds of animals and monsters, many of which are randomly created for each world, as well as generated poetry, musical forms, instruments, and dances for your dwarves to practice and perform. A dynamic weather model tracks wind, humidity, and air masses to create fronts, clouds, storms, and blizzards. Over two hundred rock and mineral types can appear, in their proper geological environments.

Freelancer
FreelancerEight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival. Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed. The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo. As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity. Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control. There can be tenuous peace between colonies' political agendas, but the grabs for holdings constantly unsettle the volatile frontier.
