Why the Original 2002 The Thing PC Game Deserves to Be on GOG
While the modern remaster may polish up the visuals and streamline some gameplay, there’s something uniquely raw and tense about the original 2002 The Thing PC game that fans still cherish today. As a direct sequel to John Carpenter’s cult-classic film, the game nails the paranoid atmosphere, body horror, and isolation that made the movie iconic.
You play as Captain Blake, leading a team into Outpost 31 after the film’s events. What made the original game stand out wasn’t just the monsters—it was the trust/fear mechanic, where your squad members could panic, betray you, or even be infected. You had to manage fear, ammo, and suspicion, all while surviving unpredictable encounters with shape-shifting enemies.
Even with a remaster, the original 2002 version holds historical and nostalgic value. Its gritty textures, early-2000s design, and haunting soundtrack are part of the experience that longtime fans remember fondly. On GOG, it would live on in its authentic form—DRM-free, preserved, and playable on modern systems without needing fan patches or workarounds.
Many of us discovered The Thing on PC during its original release and would love to revisit that version the way we first experienced it. GOG is the perfect home to keep that memory alive.

Prince of PersiaThe game is set in ancient Persia. While the sultan is fighting a war in a foreign land, his vizier Jaffar, a wizard, seizes power. Jaffar's only obstacle to the throne is the Sultan's daughter (although the game never specifically mentions how). Jaffar locks her in a tower and orders her, under threat of execution, to become his wife. The game's nameless protagonist, whom the Princess loves, is thrown into the palace dungeons. The player must lead the protagonist out of the dungeons and to the palace tower, defeating Jaffar and freeing the Princess in under 60 minutes. In addition to guards, various traps and dungeons, the protagonist is further hindered by his own doppelgänger, an apparition of his own self that is conjured out of a magic mirror.Action
God of War: AscensionGod of War: Ascension, the seventh instalment in the God of War series, acts as a prequel to the preceding games. The narrative revolves around Kratos, the protagonist from earlier instalments, who was once a loyal servant of the God of War, Ares. Tricked by Ares into unknowingly murdering his own family, Kratos breaks the blood oath binding him to Ares and abandons his former master. Subsequently, Kratos finds himself imprisoned and must navigate a path to freedom, severing the bond between him and Ares.
The game retains the familiar hack-and-slash combat system of its predecessors, featuring Kratos wielding the Blades of Chaos. However, a new addition, the World Weapon system, allows Kratos to wield various weapons. Additionally, Kratos can now acquire up to four magical disciplines—Fires of Ares, Ice of Poseidon, Lightning of Zeus, and Soul of Hades—each bestowing unique abilities and imbuing his weapon with magic. For instance, the Ice of Poseidon enables underwater breathing. Rage, a recurring feature, undergoes modifications; it accumulates through attacks, and when the bar is full, it automatically unleashes until the player ceases attacking or sustains damage. Three new relics provide Kratos with the ability to manipulate time, create a "shadow" self, and dispel illusions crafted by his guardians.
Notably, God of War: Ascension introduces online multiplayer to the series. Players, before engaging in multiplayer battles, align with one of four gods—Ares, Hades, Zeus, or Poseidon—each offering a distinct set of abilities. As players accumulate experience and level up their warriors, they unlock magical abilities, armour, weapons, relics, and other treasures.
