Around 2000 or so, long before retro gaming became as prohibitively expensive as it is today, I picked up the Sega Genesis version of the original Valis from a rental store that was clearing out its old 16-bit games. There was this game called Valis. Didn't seem that expensive and I was certainly the adventurous sort. I didn't expect that, even with the atrocious Renovation Products translation, I'd actually be enthralled by this attempt at storytelling. From then on, I tried to get as many of the games as I could. Now we have a chance to get them all in English, here on GOG, with much better translations than those old times. The Fantasm Soldier Collections feature multiple versions of many of these games that, while deeply flawed, showed that gaming could indeed be more than some throwaway pastime. If any collections deserve to be here, it'd be these.
