Vanguard Bandits is another experience that I've never seen before or since. It's incredible, and it's unique, and that makes its gaming history. Players would appreciate the kind of amazing story and gameplay on offer here, some, uh, slurs aside. I assume those can be removed? And game designers can study it for advice on how to make their own TRPGs better. It's the kind of game that makes you want to explore all the options they give you, and in the end, leave you wishing there was always just a tiny bit more to discover.
My cousin and I played this game a lot when we were teenagers. I first rented it from Blockbuster, really liked it, and ended up buying it when Blockbuster went under. I still have my old PS1 disc. I was completely enamored with the story. Branching paths, multiple endings, hidden mechanics, and a cast of interesting characters and mechs made this game unforgettable for me. It failed commercially back in the day, which is tragic. Relatively few Human Entertainment games ever made it to the West, and much of Working Designs’ work wasn’t heavily advertised either. A lot of gems like Vanguard Bandits were simply overlooked and unnoticed at the time. I would love for more people to experience this game. Has it aged well? I honestly couldn’t say, I haven’t played it in a very long time. But the fact that I still remember the characters and story decades later says something about the impact it had on me.
Easily one of my all time favorite tactics games! The story is wonderful, animations are solid and I really love the music. There's a few routes you can take which can make each run unique depending what decisions you make. I really wish to see this game again besides via emulation, though... I do still have my PS1 and a working disc for when the itch comes again. :)
This is one of those games I saw in the game shop, after looking through dozen of titles and took a chance on buying. It turned out to be a fun game I sank many hours into, discovered many hidden secrets but still never managed to complete all of it. There are mechanics the game uses to decide outcomes that initially you think little of but later discover are very important. Tactical games became my go to after this game.
A tactical mech game with dramatically varied fighting styles, heavily branching story paths, and memorable characters and designs. I've never seen anything else quite like this and it's perhaps one of the only examples of Escaflowne-style fantasy mechs in gaming- certainly it's the only one that I'm aware of. It was also my introduction to grid-based strategy games and yet, despite that, it's also still one of the more advanced and intriguing implementations that I've played. I'd say it's one of the most stylish and understated gems in the tactical RPG genre from the PS1 era. I think it lingers heavy in my memory partly because despite playing many hours into the game I never figured out how to reach a good ending. So now it lives rent-free in the depths of my brain alongside those games I never finished because my save file got corrupted or overwritten.
Those games also need your vote!
Musashi: Samurai Legend
Musashi: Samurai LegendMusashi Samurai Legend marks the second chapter in the Musashi series. You'll play as Musashi, a young swordsman summoned to rescue a kidnapped princess. The journey, however, is a difficult one, as enemies of all types stand in your way. To survive the onslaught of foes, you must learn your opponents' techniques and use their attacks against them. Some techniques let you attack multiple enemies at once. Musashi Samurai Legend immerses you in a comic book-style adventure by combining Japanese animation with dialogue balloons.
