Question I have: Can you meaningfully play Fallout/BG/PST as an adult who doesn't know the language, or only knows very little of it?

(I'm asking this question in part because I'm contemplating playing the original Romancing SaGa 2, which is in Japanese (which I only know a little of), and despite being made in Japan is basically an open world WRPG.)

I've tried to play foreign language games a few times. I find it very frustrating and I do not get very far into the game before I drop it.

I actually have been able to play some Japanese language RPGs before, and even complete them, but never any that could be classified as a WRPG. Specifically, I've beaten:
* SaGa 2 DS (a remake of a game I've played numerous times; also, it's linear unlike the Romancing SaGa games, and the original game mechanics are mostly intact)
* SaGa 3 DS (a remake of another game I've played as a child, but this time the game mechanics were completely changed; it would be as if Baldur's Gate were remade with 4th Edition rules)
* Guadia Quest Saga (subgame of Game Center CX 2, not a remake of a game I've played before; using Google Translate on a Japanese site helped with the new element that wasn't in the original Guadia Quest (subgame of Retro Game Challenge, which I played in English); also note that I did not legitimately play through the text adventure that's included in Game Center CX 2)
* Dragon Quest 9 (played and beat it in Japanese without first playing the English version)

Honorable mention goes to Dragon Quest 6 (played up until the game gets nonlinear, but I'd previously played the game with the (incomplete and buggy) translation patch; this is perhaps the least linear of these games, and it has some "talk to everyone" sections).

So, yes, I've done this before, but never for an open world WRPG (or however you'd classify the Romancing SaGa series).

Also, I actually do know a little bit of Japanese, but not much.

(By the way, in the SaGa 3 remake, I actually instantly killed the first little boss unintentionally, as the game gives you an instant death attack *really* early, which surprised me.)

(Also, note that this discussion only applies to games with significant text; one could probably take any game in the SNK collection that isn't Crystalis and play through the Japanese version without any language barrier issues.)
