If you're familiar with Cloanto's Amiga Forever package, you're probably aware of the included KNOPPIX kernel, named "KX Light". Basically, you burn it to a boot disc, and it boots you into a clone of Workbench 3.1. Problem is, my desktop's current hardware configuration is, according to Cloanto's support rep, incompatible with the current version of KX Light. I'm not sure if that means the shell doesn't support my hardware or the other way around, or if the shell needs some kind of 'hardware profile/driver set' to work.

Regardless, I've decided that what I want to do is invest in some kind of older laptop PC that will boot KX Light, but I'm not really sure what it is I should be looking for. Is anyone already doing the thing that I want to do?

While I am not familiar with the system, and don't know what version of the Linux kernel it runs, or what settings were used when compiling it, my first guess would be that it has to do with UEFI support.

If your motherboard can be set up to run in legacy BIOS mode, try that. If it doesn't work, switch back and try a suggestion from someone else, hell, even if it does work, you'll likely want to switch back because the OS you're running otherwise is likely to be confused by the change, but at least you'll then know what to look for in a secondary machine.
You know why you want to do this? WinUAE is superior to any other version and with Amiga Forever you can boot into WB 3.1. under Windows easily, too? Better emulation and probably faster, too.

It's not emulation, though. It's a native OS.

I don't know if my motherboard has legacy support on it. It's an ASUS Sabertooth 990FX (first release).

Its a native Linux that starts UAE, an Amiga emulator for Unix systems, to boot into WB 3.1 afaik. The Amiga OS is not native. So you run Workbench 3.1 under Linux and else you run it under Windows. IS KX light even supported any further?

Toni Wilen brings out a new Winuae with great new feature like every few months, you even can emulate Amiga OS 4 now and alot of Hardware like accellerator cards together with 3.1 and in full screen mode it doesnt look different than what KX light offers, just more compatible, faster and easier to handle.
That's fine, but it doesn't answer my question. What kind of older laptop would run KX Light?

Any that runs an older Linux, but as older Linuxes run quite bad on Laptops, your best bet would be an old T-Series from Lenovo as they got alot of support, but no guarantee here. Or you have to upgrade your Linux to a modern simple Knoppix and adjust yourself. I did run this thing back in 2005 or 2006 on a desktop and don`t think it got maintained much since then.

I just cant see a point to install a very old linux with an amiga emulator when you can do the same with a modern system with alot better outcome and a modern emulator.

Your best bet to get a real good answer is to visit the English Amiga Board and ask there, maybe some people can help you, but well, its something to play around with but with no real use.

Now you're beginning to understand.

I've booted Amiga Forever in Live KX mode on an old Dell Lattitude i5 laptop. circa 2011.

I know it's an old thread but the original poster might find it useful.
