Looking back at all the games I played, I realise that I often leave them unfinished. And I'm not talking about games I hated and quit because they sucked. I'm talking about genuinely good games, games I liked, sometimes even loved. And yet so many I never actually played all the way through to end credits. The first Warcraft, Starcraft, Divine Divinity, Lionheart, Diablo 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Armies of Exigo, Lords of Xulima etc.

Sometiems it was a matter of progress lost to some unfortunate accident, but I still could have started all over and played it all again, to the end this time. I know many hardcore players would. And often it was just that the game was really, really long and I wanted to play something else, and never went back to it. Or, let's face it, because it was difficult, and I got stuck, and banging my head against the wall was no longer fun, so I shamefully accepted defeat and moved on.

Just now I'm looking at Morrowind's and Starcrawler's icons on my desktop, and I can't help but know that I'm probably never going to finish them, despite having sank hours upon hours into them.

Do you guys do that too? Leave good games unfinished? Or am I just a really lousy gamer? What are the games you liked, but never finished?

I do this. Once in a great while it's because I get distracted. Mostly it's just because I might eventually "burn out" on a game. Sure it's a great game, I might even still be having a pretty good time - but sometimes they just drag on or I just feel like I'm "done" with them.

Don't get me wrong, I solve plenty of the games I play. But I never feel the obligation to do it. And yup, like you sometimes I can think of a few I regret not finishing off. Once in a while I'll even go back and do it ;) Sometimes I'll even start fresh LOL.

Ironically the first two Witcher games are ones I went back to - Witcher 1 I picked up and solved after a VERY long hiatus. 2 I started fresh over again from the beginning...

... I sunk what felt like 100 + hours in 3, got pretty close to the end (I assume) and still haven't put 3 to bed. Right when I should have made a push for the end of the main game, I wandered off to colorful French fairtale knight land LOL.

Breja: Lionheart,
is a bad game so after the first town no reason to play it
Sounds like a serious character flaw. Unless a game is just boring or doesn't appeal to me (e.g. Warcraft 3 Frozen throne, didn't like the level design), I usually finish games I've started.
Of course there are also rare occasions when I haven't finished a game because of difficulty (e.g. I only played Starcraft Brood war until the 8th or 9th Zerg level, then cheated to see the ending movie).

That first city is absolutely brilliant though. In itself it would be a strong contender for my favorite RPG ever. I'll admit, the game does go downhill from there, but it's still not "bad", and it does have some very, very good parts later on too. I semi-remember a town in some mountain country which was also a really great location. Honestly, the only reason I never finished it is that eventually I reached a point where my ice-focused mage was just worthless in combat.

Yeah, I still finish more games than I abandon. And usually when I abandon a game I only think of it as taking a break. It's rarely my plan to leave it for good. And sometimes I do return to it - I took a lengthy break from the first Drakensang before I finished it, and I already came back to Morrowind I think three times, to play it for weeks before taking a break again. With some games, like Morrowind, the problem seems to be that side-stuff is more interesting than the main quest, and there's just so much to do it feels like the game is just endless :D

Yup I do. Generally, the game is good/excellent, it's just that it doesn't fit my mood of the moment. So I stop playing it, let it rest for a while and try it again later.

On the contrary, when I'm hooked on a game, I can barely play anything else until completed.

My perfect example of good game I never finish is certainly Kingdom of Amalur Reckoning. I keep playing it for a while then put it on the backburner.

Last few years I have been doing the same thing. For me it's because of my odd work schedule. Sometimes I have loads of free time, and I'll stick with one game during that time. Then I get crazy hours that last for a few months sometimes, and when I finally get the free time to load it up, I don't remember what I had planned or what I was going to do. I end up either restarting the game or do a time killing game like old school Doom.

And, this particular game is Morrowind as well, haha!
I find the more active games i have going, the more likely i am to drop one or more of them, merely from not touching one for a month or longer.
I tend to abandon games if I start playing different games from different genres for variation. RPGs are probably the hardest to return to, and the type fo game you are the least motivated to do all over again at any point.

If you're gonna not finish a really good game, Morrowind is a good choice to not finish. All the ES games are so sandboxy that there's no real sense of completion at the end. They're perfect games to play until you're done. Don't think twice about it. Wanna know what happens at the end of Morrowind? You win. Then you can keep playing if you want.

For me, it's more that I never start most of the games I buy. Looks like, once I sift out duplicates, I own just over 600 games on Steam and GOG combined. I haven't ever played even as many as a quarter of 'em. :/

i only read the title but i think that games are like children - for example if you abandon breja, it turns out into something bad that stalks your memories like a troll.. :-/ but seriously, does this mean breja deserves good parents? or do bad games deserve to be finished? hell no! so yes it's a very interesting topic indeed.. :'(
I pretty much never abandon a game, regardless of quality (well, I mostly only play good games anyway). Add to that that I only really ever play one game at a time which certainly helps.
