what Game?

try to find out if it has a SOURCE PORT!

Look up name of the game (FOR EXAMPLE "CATS.exe") and type in SOURCE PORT
I've seen a few games where it stores the install/cd/save directories in the registry.

Annoying as hell...

No one would be able to help you if you don't tell us the game's name. LOL

Nevertheless if you need technical support this isn't the best place to get it. You need to fill in this form for that.

Hope it helps. Good luck.
Most of the games from the Windows XP era stored their paths and some of their settings in the registry.

Might also be specific engines. I see a number of games that are VN's that did that especially.

But it's an extra step that makes compatibility just a hair annoying to fully get right, especially if you move whole directories somewhere else on the drive to make it cleaner, or another drive to isolate it, and then it refuses to work even if all the files are in the same place.

Like leaving the lens protectors on the binoculars but using it to see if the elephant 2 feet in front of it is there, then yelling that there's no elephant.

Are you sure that the registry is needed at all? I have many games from GOG which write into the register, but it usually seems it is just the way GOG tracks on which folder you install games. You can move the folder and it should keep working. I install all my games on a network drive (on a NAS) and they are usually all playable from any computer on the house, even when the game wasn't installed on one of them. Some games doesn't work from a network drive at all, but they are just a few, and not registry related (they doesn't work on the installed computer either). I have most of my old games just copied from an install on a previous computer too, and they work.

In other words, the installer may have written on the registry, but it may be not needed at all for the game to work. Just try it...

I thought it was the ini file(s) that specified related folders.

Regardless, rename the folder (add a _ to the end) and see if the game works. It should be very quick, like deleting the steam.exe if it requires steam DRM to run.
