It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

I am quite fond of the GOG Downloader, but it does have it limitations and annoyances.

The biggest annoyance I guess, is when you can't easily download everything that appears on you games Library page. Sometimes that is bonus content, mainly on the right column, but sometimes the left. In fact, with a game (series of videos) I bought yesterday, I got nothing of the 20 Episodes listed in the left column, on the GOG Downloader Links page, whereas all the DLC extras (more videos), were available there from the right column. See my tip below about how to get around that.

The next big annoyance, is the speed of downloading, especially for any file that isn't a main game one, which includes 32 bit variants for a 64 bit game, which is very frustrating. Often the download speed for those and extras, can be in the Kb's not Mb's, and often as low as 100 Kb/s. Some of those extras, like the 32 bit executable and bin files, can be huge and take many hours to download at the given speed ... half a day even. That is just ridiculous in 2019. The bias against should not be so severe. Using your browser instead, to download, often means you get the same files at the same time of day, much faster, but obviously not the same level of error checking, which you certainly want with large files.
It is so VERY VERY ANNOYING. I am sure you can do better GOG.

TIP
To get around the non existent links for the GOG Downloader, you first need to grab an existing link from the page that opens when you choose 'GOG Downloader Links' from the game Library menu 'More'.
i.e. gogdownloader://double_fine_adventure/12345
NOTE - That '12345' is fake and not the real ID in this instance. It is that ID and the game name that you need though.

Next step is to look back at your game Library page, and copy a missing link from those you can use with your browser.
What you need from that link is the ID (last portion) and the game name.
i.e. https://www.gog.com/downloads/double_fine_adventure/avideo1
NOTE - The 'avideo1' is also fake, but gives you the idea.

To get the correct link you need for the GOG Downloader, you combine the right elements.
i.e. gogdownloader://double_fine_adventure/avideo1

With the GOG Downloader running, you enter that link in your browser address field, and hit ENTER. It should then appear in the GOG Downloader and display the right icon and start downloading.

I thought I might get around the issue of no links for the GOG Downloader for the Double Fine Adventure game videos, by installing GOG Galaxy for the first time. But no, it had the same issue.

That was when I figured out how to create the correct link (URL) for the GOG Downloader, but the 1 Gb+ videos would only download at between 200 to 300 Kb/s a second, so I gave up and used my browser instead, where they downloaded at around 5 Mb/s.

P.S. I also checked out other downloaders, but due to the GOG additional device check, and 4 digit code, none worked ... including one I had built myself.

Thank you for your research!

I am pretty sure they will give the old downloader the final death blow this year.

If my math is correct, a 50GB download would need ~48½ days to download at 100kb/s... No thank you! My biggest games are bigger than that.

I wonder if lgogdownloader would work somehow, either by directly compiling it for Windows or using the built-in Linux compatibility layer. Much easier to get going once configured. It also supports recent 2-factor authentication (which I have disabled on gog, but I guess you don't).

No problem.

Well I hope not, as I wasn't much impressed with Galaxy, which seems a lot like a browser embedded in a GUI, and I could do without the resulting overhead.

I finished downloading the Episodes via my browser downloader, and started the Extras using the GOG Downloader. Those extras add up to 20.7 Gb, and I have frustratingly been watching them for a good while now, with the speed varying between 100 and 200 Kb's.

So time to give up and download them via the browser downloader too.

I just don't get the reasoning behind deliberately limiting the speed by so much in the GOG Downloader.

No idea.
I also tried with the 2-factor authentication disabled, and it made no difference.
I'm not about to leave it disabled permanently, and it was an absolute pain to toggle the state, requiring an email for each change ... which seems a bit silly (overkill) for the enabling side of it.

Yep, using my browser to download, I am getting the Extras downloading at over 5 Mb/s.

So I am afraid I just don't get it. How are GOG benefiting by hamstringing the GOG Downloader? Seems very odd to me.

I want to use the batch download in series and with error checking, that the GOG Downloader provides. Just a totally crazy situation.

While GOG Downloader remains functional, it's no longer being developed. Its functions are now offered by GOG GALAXY.

But thanks a lot for the tips! :D
Thank you OP for these tips...tips which are VERY useful to those of us like me who are cool with the GOGdownloader but want absolutely no parts of Galaxy. Also a bit of thanks to GOG for keeping Downloader around (I mean, it could have been completely taken away like GOGmixes)...hoping it continues to be able to be used.

Why don't you give gogrepo a try? It's like the GOG Downloader on steroids. Still the best way to backup GOG games.

Just like the GOG Downloader, your Galaxy program was missing those video downloads the main element of the Game entry for Double Fine Adventure Definitive Edition

And today, I fired up Galaxy again, because I finally remembered to buy a drive to store my Linux games from GOG on.

Seeing as you recommended it, I thought I would give it a try ..... so far, I am not impressed. :(

1. It failed to remember my password, and so I had to dig that out again.
2. It loaded the GOG main page, instead of my Library.

In Galaxy Settings, I have Keep me logged in enabled, and the Start page as my Library. So clearly it ignored both those settings.

Then to add insult to injury, I could find no way to have it download the Linux variants of my games. This is on my Windows 7 machine, so obviously I want to just Download, not Install.

Is Galaxy going to do anything I am likely to use it for? It has failed 4 out of 4 so far.

Sorry to complain, because I love you folks heaps, but I do find the whole situation absolutely ridiculous.

EDIT
Ok, I have just worked out how to get the Linux versions. Talk about a convoluted un-intuitive way to do things.

Why is it that selecting Linux for my library, where it displays 157 games instead of 756, isn't enough?

Because then I have to select 'Backup Goodies' from the Menu for each game as I do them.
Then the bit I missed before, select 'Linux' from the GAME BACKUP COPY -> OS.

Basically I am having to select Linux twice for my first game, and then once each again for every other game.
Putting it into Linux view should be enough, on all accounts, as I am not going to be installing the Linux variant into Windows.
Just too many fiddly clicks.

And why does the download disappear from view all the time, in the left column of Galaxy? I like to see what is going on and also the record of what has happened so far.

I hope all this stuff has been implemented in Galaxy 2.0 .... or I am not going to be a happy man ... especially if you drop the GOG Downloader.

I may indeed check that out.

Thanks for the tip.

Is that one of the ones on the list somewhere here at GOG, that I checked two days ago? They appeared to all be from 2011 or 2012 I seem to recall.

Further to Post #9.

Galaxy really seems to be a memory hog too, slowing everything down on my PC.

When I go back to my games list, to select the next game for downloading, it doesn't always go back to the right tab, and I end up back at the first tab/page .... that's another pain.

Why isn't there a selector for page tabs at the top of each page, so we don't have to scroll to the bottom of the page first each time?

How do I adjust the downloads speed in Galaxy on-the-fly? It is hogging too much of my bandwidth.

I know I am not alone in this, Galaxy seems like a backward step compared to the GOG Downloader.

I am sure that Galaxy has its good uses, but clearly not for gamers like myself, who want to keep things quick and simple.

Please NEVER NEVER get rid of the GOG Downloader .... and how about some little improvements to it.

As they say, the right tool for the right job. Many of us don't need or want Galaxy.
Thanks, will check it out.

This and that the files it downloads are not the offline backups but the installers that include Galaxy, I'm not sure why they would do this but it is annoying.

As a side note, I see your profile picture is Red Green, do they actually air that in Australia?

I have heard it did air once ... probably just a season or two.

I never heard about it, until put onto it by someone at a programming forum. They posted a couple of clips, and I was hooked after watching them, so ordered a DVD to checkout some more. Then loving all of that, went and bought the lot, 15 seasons (in special boxsets), movie and all.

I love it all, but I can see where the first few seasons wouldn't have made much impact here. The later seasons might have though, if given a chance.

I am happy to report, that I was finally able to get Free Download Manager (FDM) properly integrated with my browser (Brave, a better Chrome clone).

With FDM I am able set speed of downloading, and number of connections and number of simultaneous downloads, which means I am able to queue and resume, and get full feedback .... not to mention, error checking.

This also means I can have the downloading almost flat out, but still have some reserve to get other downloads and even browse.

A good day for GOG Gamer Downloaders. :)
