After more than one year, this thread was linked by someone (PixelBoy) and noticed that I never posted the Richard Burns Rally intructions.
Of course, sadly the game is not available on GOG, but is the only simulator type of car racing game available DRM-free that I can think of. It's very well designed and holds up pretty well even today.
Is the only game I've played that actually tech you what diferent car settings do at the "rally school", like softer and harder suspension.
The game is not sold anymore but if anyone wants to play it, there are a lot of physical copies available on the web and the game was featured on several magazines, wich means, the game was free with the CD of the magazine (that's how I got my copy), usually available for very cheap.
You have to do your own search, since the magazine nº varies from Country to Country, but for what's worth, on Portugal the game was featured on issue nº 112 of BGamer. Abandonware sites might also be a option.
If you really want a physical copy and cannot get on your country, I may be able to help.
After getting hold of the DVD, you need a DVD player to be able to get the files (who would have guess that?). The easiest way is to installl the game on a machine with DVD player and simply copy the instalation folder to the Steam Deck. Otherwise, make a Iso from the DVD and install on the Deck.
In my case, the instalation folder is located on C:/program files X86/SCi Games.
The game runs very well on the Deck with Proton 7 or 8 (or any other version I've thrown at it) and battery lasts for eternity. The car is easier to control at high FPS's but locking at 60 will display ~5.5-6.5W power used.
I've attached a acreenshot of my gamepad configuration, note that I've mapped Select -> "ESCape" and Start -> "Enter" to be able to navigate on the menu, since the game doesn't use the gamepad on the menu (like many other "racing sims"). Also map the direction buttons.
To change graphic options run "RBR_Startup.exe" (or better yet, edit "RichardBurnsRally.ini") from the game folder, otherwise "RichardBurnsRally.exe" to launch the game.
Use the profile name MULLIGATAWNY to unlock all the cars.
That's all you need to do, basically the same as any other game. The tricky part begins now.
To play the game with mods, like updated physics (NGP etc etc), the only way I could get it to work is installing the game and the mods on another computer and transfer the instalation folder to the Deck.
I highly recomend using the Fixup patch and installing general mods will probably require a entire guide, not because it's dificult but because the way to install keeps changing (because the mods themselfs keeps being worked on).
If anyone needs help, ping me either on this thread or by Private message, I'll be happy to help.
The other Screenshots are not at 60FPS and is using a modded version, with a car much newer than when the game was made. New physics are very good and the car selection is worth it :)
Couple of links that might change in the future but here they are:

Edit: BTW, stay da heck away from the PS2 version of this game. Runs like crap and plays like crap.
