I bought CotN (Children of the Nile) on 8/20/15, downloaded and installed without any special 'settings' or problems.
Then on 12/23/15 I got a new Win 10 PC. Reinstalled the game with no problems, directly from the setup-file I had downloaded and had on a disk. I just installed it to 'C:\Games\Children of the Nile Complete', not a special Gog-folder or anything.
I used it quite a bit in 2016 with never a problem, then left it for a while. Early 2018 I picked it up again, and started making scenarios, no problems.
My latest scenario was finished and published 12/27/18. Then started a new scenario about a week later. Worked on the map, no problem. Entered some message effect in triggers, no problem. Then started on a world level... crash.
And it kept crashing and crashing every time I tried to work on any world level whatsoever. This was on 1/16/19.
I kept trying, but nothing helped. I sent the file I was working on to a fellow user (who is on Steam), it does not crash for her.
I tried uninstalling the game, and re-installing (cleaning out any and all files), still crashing. I went on GOG and downloaded a new install file. Installed... still crashing.
I thought i must be something in my PC creating a conflict, so installed it on a laptop. That crashed too.
Now, the laptop had problems, and after closing and reopening it, it was black screen, so I couldn't be real sure about that one.
On 1/18/19 my PC crashed completely to the point of not being able to boot. Both my PC and the laptop went to the repair shop.... turns out my SSD drive was history. So now I'm thinking 'oh, good, that's the reason CotN crashed', with the laptop install still nagging me though.
Yesterday I had my PC back, good as new, new SSD and new Win 10 install. Spent a long time getting all my business- and other important software back up and running. THEN I go install CotN. Well it won't even open.
Then I installed CotN on my husbands PC, which is smaller but the exact same setup with Win 10. Installed fine, crashed as soon as I try working on a world level.
SO, what is going ON here????
I know a Microsoft software will only be installed so many times before it's all over. But isn't this supposed to be drm free games?
Did I originally have some Gog-file or other that is now gone, and the game can't live without it?
None of this makes any sense to me, but no matter what I do, it will either not start up at all, or it will crash when working on it.
Other people keep telling me to get a steam version... which, as far as I understand, will require me to be logged into steam to even work on it... I don't care for that kind of 'spying' on me.
Do I have any choice?

If you installed the game (through offline installer or Galaxy), it should run, unless something else is amiss.

I don't have the game and neither Windows 10, but it's not the first time a Windows 10 update would break other stuff, so Win 10 might be the culprit.

Here's the game specific forum: https://www.gog.com/forum/children_of_the_nile_complete - maybe someone had similar problems. Also don't be afraid to contact support.

ToxicTom, Thanks for answering.
The specific forum is not really alive. I did send a report to support, it might take a while, but I'm waiting for their response.

I just installed CotN to check if I (Win10 64bit, latest update) run into the same problems.

All works well (apart from the graphics settings - looks like I can't change resolution to 1920x1080):

-I installed and started the game -ok
-I exited the game, started anew -ok
-I started a pre-made scenario -ok
-I started creating a scenario -ok
-I exited the game again, restarted it, loaded my test scenario -ok

So, sorry - but I'm unable to replicate your error.

Thanks all for trying to help.
I just dug out an old XP that hasn't been touched in 3 years, but it runs. Installed... get 'd3dx9_33.dll not found'...
it's on DirectX 9.0c which should be ok, but apparently isn't. I can't update this old PC, as it cannot go online.
I'll have a look at the above link as well.

Well, others have tried that too, and they can run fine.
Resolution won't run about 1600x900.

Thanks for trying anyway.

You can download DirectX 9.0c here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=34429

That is the full installer, copy to your XP machine (USB stick and the like) and try if the game will run now.

Oh, thank you so much, I was looking for that :)
I will try to download and install that and see what happens.

That web installer hasn't worked since Vista.

Jytte: ....
Get this proper full one instead: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

This setup will only extract the necessary files to the folder of your choosing. Once it closes, open the folder to which you extracted the files, run DXSETUP.exe as administrator, let it do its thing, then reboot.

You can remove the folder with the extracted installation files later on if you wish to conserve space.

I tried the first one, it was suspiciously fast, and no effect
The one you link, will this work without internet on the XP?

A sorry, I got the wring link. Although I was searching for "Redist", see Plokite_Wolf's post for the current page.

Yup! It has all the necessary files within it.

Thank you so much! It's downloading now, will take a while, I'm in the boonies of Germany, slow internet.
I'll try that one and see if it will run. Will report back.

HA ! Cotn is up and running on the old XP :)

Thank you guys, you are the best!

Now to see if it will hold or crash when I go fiddle with world level.....
Wellllll... it crashes.

The exact same crashes I started out with in my own PC... and have duplicated in other PC's here, including the old XP.

Here's exactly what I did:

Open Abu (the original game in there) in editor
Save a copy of it
Pick the 'Nubian Main Column'
make it visible, replace
make it an 'enemy fort', replace
move it to 365-370, replace
save another new copy
move Nubian to x400, replace
move Nubian to x300, replace
move Nubian back to x365, replace
save yet another copy
moving fine limestone somewhere to the left..... BOOM (crash to desktop)

and that my friends is what it keeps doing, the amount of things I can move before it happens varies, but IT.WILL.CRASH

What seems to cause it is moving an enemy site to 365-370, THAT will make CotN crash without fail, at least for me.

So, WHAT is the problem??????????

Others have claimed to do the same without crashes...... I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND !!!

I must've offended some Egyptian God.... I'm cursed :(
