AnimalMother117: Ah, the GOG is just an arbitrary name now and their games catalogue is not based on preserving old games but rather a curated library.
GOG has never preserved a single game as far as I'm aware of. All of their older games are modified from what they used to be, some even come without any original executables.
But GOG back in the day was the place to find older games that weren't available elsewhere, many times distributed digitally for the first time here.
That's not preservation though, although keeping games legally available is a great thing too.

And they are crazy expensive to boot. With that price you would think you got a pound of chocolate or something and not just an empty shell with junk inside.

Cavalary: The first issue is that GOG has stopped being "Good Old Games" in 2012.
Other than that, the workaround still works.
Why they don't add it back in the UI... Well, that's GOG for you, don't expect it to make sense, or to lift as much as a finger for their old core audience instead of laying it all on the altar of growth at all costs and general mass appeal.
Because they started offering a download manager and later Galaxy? You can still download the normal setup files, you know. You always could.Other than that, the workaround still works.

Mr.Mumbles: To be frank, that chocolate isn't all the great and the toys were pretty junky, too, so I think we dodged a bullet there. ;)
Silver lining and all that? :) =-=-=

It is in a way....a different kind of preservation, I mean. Gog "preserves" some games so they work on new OSs, whereas other sites preserve them in their original state. To me, both serve a role. (though, of course, i'd like GOG to provide the original files as well, for further preservation purposes)

GOG is fine. At least they been getting more old-school RPGs again.

I'm not sure year was all that useful anyway, as it often seems to be when the publisher provided and not when the actual game was released.
In any case, I gave up trusting filters a good while ago, as they are not perfect and you can miss something.

i loved the filter!!
It was an amazing, incredibly helpful and fantastic filter for seachring ONLY the genres, games and titles I am interested and looking for.
Now, I have all the new creepy shit on this site. I could cry - how - really (!!) - how can a side, which offers old classic games - remove the core of his "purchase-product?"?
Its dont getting in my head. Creepy shit all over the world - everything is becoming more and more superficial and stupid. :((

my name is sadde catte: What has Cavalary's post got to do with the downloader or Galaxy? Titanium: The first version of GOG was actually on the radio. It wasn't until later that they adapted it to a format for viewing audiences.

XVX777: I thought that was what he was implying, in the update link he posted, I couldn't find any other thing somebody might see as problematic that GOG did in 2012, aside from announcing their GOG downloader. Oh I'm well aware. ;)

my name is sadde catte: The post is pointing out that GOG literally ceased to be Good Old Games in 2012.
As I recall it was more of a transition, but yes they definitely at one point changed all the banners and explained with horror that they need to sell the new video games too, by George. What I always found hilarious is that, as I saw it, from the very beginning they announced all these core values of the site and as it seems at the same time realised what a big miscalculation that was and started slowly picking away at the edges. It wasn't even that subtle. Fun for the whole family.

There was a definite point where they said "GOG does not stand for Good Old Games" but that might have been after months of implying it without people getting it. :P What I always found hilarious is that, as I saw it, from the very beginning they announced all these core values of the site and as it seems at the same time realised what a big miscalculation that was and started slowly picking away at the edges. But yes, there were a great many core values at the beginning with only one remaining (barely)...

Yes, exactly. I think they were beating around the bush for a while and then an announcement "Listen here you little shits..." I sure wish that Stockholm syndrome would finally start to kick in.
