There was an Aztec zone in https://www.mobygames.com/game/crystal-maze although I don't remember much about it.

Edit: By the way, there are two versions of The Crystal Rain Forest.

Thanks, I've made some progress based on this. It looks like there are actually three versions. V2 from 2005, the 1999 V1 for PC and Mac, and the real original V1 from 1992 for Acorn Archimedes.

I was only seeing screenshots and videos from this version, which looked too fancy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJXLfXZuBiA

But I would have played the Acorn Archimedes version, which looks like THIS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMi0QoLB4gM

I totally remember playing that game at school, which is a good find in itself (although I wish there was footage somewhere of the full version), but I don't think it's the specific Aztec game I'm looking for. However, the same developers - Sherston Software - made another game for Acorn PCs just a year later called Aztecs. There's almost no information on it that I can find, but here's a copy on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sherston-Software-Aztecs-for-Acorn-RISC-OS-computers-/184055274196

Considering the others asking are both from the UK where Acorn PCs in schools were common, I bet that's the game we're all looking for.

I've attached the images from the eBay listing here in case they go away in the future. Sadly I can't find so much as a screenshot anywhere.

Interesting; and it looks as though this may be your lucky day: https://damn.technology/time-detectives-and-aztecs
Graciously, the original authors of Time Detectives and Aztecs have given their consent for me to make these available.
Nice! I'm downloading that now.

I've also found a product description, which confirms it's the same game the OP is looking for.

From the first post:

ghidorah221: - The plot involved a child (or children) being thrown back in time to Aztec era by an old Doc Brown (style) character.
- The main game involved the children solving a variety of puzzles in an Aztec village to get home.
- Near the beginning of play, you are in a plane flying over the ocean, and then something happens when you fly over the Bermuda Triangle and are pulled through to another time and place.
And from: http://www.cjemicros.co.uk/micros/individual/newprodpages/prodinfo.php?prodcode=SHE-AZTEC
"Aztecs is an adventure set in Tenochtitlan, the centre of the Aztec empire. The year is 1519 when the power of emperor Montezuma II was at its height just before Hernan Cortes and his Spaniards landed and destroyed the Aztec empire. The children, who have been accidentally catapulted back in time during a helicopter trip through the mysterious Bermuda Triangle with their eccentric uncle Angus, are soon immersed in the world of the Aztecs as they try to prove an innocent man did not steal Montezuma's precious turquoise mask. During the adventure they have to learn as much as they can about the Aztec people and their way of life if they are to survive. Luckily their uncle's computer/jet pack has a data bank which is second to none and is an invaluable source of information!"

Yep, this is it for sure. Aztecs by Sherston Software, 1993.

I've attached some screenshots from near the start of the game here, since none seem to exist on the Internet already. The first two show the crop growing part I mentioned in my first post.

I uploaded more than just these five to an imgur gallery, but gog.com is telling me " You cannot post any links at this moment" if I try to link it. It's imgur.com/a [slash] drEvsKl

Ah, I think a minimum rep requirement for posting links was added after a spam wave. Here's your gallery link: https://imgur.com/a/drEvsKl
crystal rainforest isn't the one I remember. I remember it being more pixellated, this game looks way too moden to be from the 90s on an Acorn Computer.

I remember there being a bit where you had to move the sun to make some kind of door open, because rthe door made the shadow of the door move or something (really outside the box problem solving). all the kids tried EVERYTHING to get that door open, even the teacher could not work it out. it was like a whole class effort to finish that game!!

and the "have a good cry" option. the programmers had a sense of humour.
