So the main reason I have always purchased games on GOG over Steam (even if they might be a little more expensive on GoG at times) - was one very simple reason.

I can't not STAND when I launch a game, and something else (say for example, STEAM) opens up FIRST and then I need to launch my game from THERE just to start the game.

Normally because I typically purchase older games, that required DOS to run - I never ran into the issue when I downloaded the stand alone installers.

Lo and behold, I bought The Witcher 3: Game of the Year Edition, downloaded the stand alone installers, expecting the same behavior - and BOOM - it installs GOG Galaxy. I thought that was odd, so I uninstalled GOG Galaxy, tried to launch the game - it tanks. Reinstall the game, launch it - and lo and behold - GOG GALAXY loads up and I am forced to click PLAY from there.

If this is a feature of future, modern games, I will resume seeking the original games rather than purchasing them through here or Steam. It's perhaps trivial, but enough of an annoyance to drive me away from purchasing anything that has GOG GALAXY shoved down our throats.

I believe that games that require to have GOG GALAXY as a part of the launch should be NOTED in the description for requirements of the game - so that those of us (as few - is it just me?) who avoid it know not to purchase it.
GOG has stated multiple times that the Galaxy client will always be optional.
It's not optional for some games, though. Some games use GOG achievements and require Galaxy to hook into the API.

Not required for the game...

So don't use Achievements then? It's optional for people who choose not to use Achievements.

How else would they offer Achievements without Galaxy?

SirTawmis: ...
I agree with the title. However currently Galaxy is only required for multi-player and online features (achievements and whatnot), never single-player. Download the game parts as "offline backup game installers" and you don't have to worry about Galaxy.

I personally like Galaxy. To each their own I guess :)

There's no way Galaxy should have installed if you used the backup game installers. Did you DL those or did you mistakenly click the big blue button that says Download and Install Now? If you did the latter, then that's why you got Galaxy, as that's the Galaxy installer. The backups are Galaxy-free.

If you still have the game installed, but have uninstalled Galaxy, just make a short cut to the game's executable in whatever directory you installed the game. That should bypass Galaxy. The default shortcut will use Galaxy if the game installed with it.So just get rid of the default and make a shortcut directly to the game exe.

Well, good news.

Galaxy literally doesn't exist for Linux.

As long as this remains true, your fears won't ever come true.

It was mandatory with the physical version. I wasn't allowed to install the game without Galaxy and a day one patch.

you could have redeemed the physical version for a GOG copy and download that Galaxy free.... But I get your point. How would you know that if you didn't know about GOG ahead of time? That was kind of the point of directing people to GOG, but I feel that was underhanded a little.

I didn't go into the Extra/Advanced options on the stand alone installers - honestly, if it was there, I missed it (assuming that Galaxy would not install by default). I will uninstall Witcher 3 again, and see if that exists.
