Recently giveaways on the GOG front page have been accompanied by the caveat "By clicking the ‘Add to library’ button, I agree to receive marketing communication from GOG sp. z o.o. on my email address and through GOG services, connected to my GOG account"

I have wondered if this was a one-off, and not clicked the 'Add to library' button, but as time goes on and it keeps happening I wonder if this is the price of give-aways on an ongoing basis.

What do people think? Getting future give-aways will depend on getting added to the mailing list?

What do people do? Click 'Add to library' and then go and opt-out of the mailing-list? Or click 'Add to library' and then add a filter in their mail client to handle such incoming messages? How have people adjusted to this trend? I'm wondering what way forward to consider.
This has always been the case. Or at least as long as I can remember. We've just added more notices in more places now.

I posed the question because it has not always been the case in my experience.

Maybe it was changed as recently as 2018, possibly even more recently, but give-aways used to present just a claim button without the preamble.

So I'm wondering what customers do about it.

I stopped clicking them.

No, this is a rather recent thing that hasn't been done in the past.

All right, not quite that recent anymore, since IIRC it started around 2-3 years ago. But it's still relatively new considering how long GOG has already been around.
It makes no difference to me. I've always been subscribed to everything.
Even if the newsletter bothered me, I don't claim games on giveaway often enough for it to be an issue.

I think you're just about right. I can't remember when exactly they did the change, but it's been done in the last few years.
Giveaways were once real giveaways, now they're trying to be another sneaky corporate stunt.

This is what I do. Luckily, it is quick and easy to do. For now. And while it's just a small PITA, it's also a huge disrespect for the customers, IMO (just another day for GOG management).

I mean, they're still giveaways, which is good and appreciated, but they leave a bit of an aftertaste now.

You can always unsubscribe, I did that a couple of times but to be honest, I found quite helpful the mails, specially the extra discounts, you can always pay less :D

Stopped clicking them, as well.

I likewise stopped clicking the "Yes, and claim the game" buttons because none of the games since the introduction of this pattern have really grabbed me. But as time goes on, I wonder - what about when a future giveaway does really grab me?

I'm less impressed with the "GOG.com Team" misinformation / retcon (surely they have better access than any to fact-check their own business practices) and appreciate the peer support from customers with corroborating memories.

Thank you clarry, Ice_Mage, Kerebron, Ruvika, lolplatypus; that's a helpful diversity of responses. I appreciate it.

In my case that has happened already. Didn't change anything tbh. I don't want GOG's 'marketing communication' and that's that. I don't see why that would be negotiable.
