schmoemi: At least the latter is supposed to be a remake of the former, I guess...!?
Not really a remake, no. Has very little to do with the first game, other than maybe being set in the same universe and being 1000 years apart. Would be like saying Doom (2016), is a remake of Doom (1993). Although the Lords of the Fallen situation was so confusing you can find sources, claiming it to be pretty much everything. Remake, reboot, sequel, restart, reimagining, new game etc.. Pick your poison I guess.

schmoemi: But:

These haven't much in common, besides the title...
Yeah, forgot about Prey. Great example too.

Tarhiel: Instabuy, and yes, it is confusing, because this game pops up in my mind immediately :)

idbeholdME: Seems to be in fashion these days:
https://www.mobygames.com/game/70756/lords-of-the-fallen/
https://www.mobygames.com/game/210185/lords-of-the-fallen/

The new game used to have "The" in the title, but apparently it got removed and now they are named exactly the same? To keep it non-confusing I guess....

Also Hitman. You have Hitman, Hitman 2, Hitman 3, Hitman: Blood Money, Hitman: Absolution, Hitman, Hitman 2, Hitman 3.

Yes, they had subtitles, but everyone always referred to them with just the numbers. Makes it really convenient to look up info about a specific game....
I don't think this is the same sort of thing as your examples. Are this game and Inquisitor 2009 even related (beyond the obvious overlap in general setting, theme and tone, and both being products of Middle European Slavic developers) ? I see no reference to Jacek Piekara in the descriptions of the older Inquisitor, either here or on Wikipedia, but on the latter site, it mentions that game as having been "inspired by Umberto Eco's works such as The Name of the Rose." They're also from different developers and publishers, whereas both Lords of the Fallen titles are from the same publisher (who I'm pretty sure only used the name because they had the rights to it), and the Hitman game franchise has mainly (only?) had the same dev company for its entire run.
(Also, the third game in the Hitman franchise originally had no number -- it was just Hitman: Contracts. Why "3" was later added to its store pages and such, but not "4" for Blood Money, nor "5" for Absolution, I haven't the foggiest notion.)

Well, originally, I was just pointing out the sometimes honestly dumb naming practices, which happen in some cases and how confusing/inconvenient it might become to look up information about the games in the future.

Whether or not the same named games are related is a follow up, separate discussion.

I agree, this naming "convention" is confusing (similar with DOOM (1993) and DOOM (2016)), especially for newcomers.

It might not be as much for people who are into gaming and know the differences now, but it will be increasingly confusing as the time goes on.
I just hope they would be able to think about better titles.
Nice! I've been waiting for this game! Thank you for bringing it to GOG with the Deluxe Content and achievements. Into the cart it goes.

Cavalary: Well, this is likely to ruffle some feathers.
And at least they added the "The" so it won't get confusing. But made me wonder how would GOG's system handle it if there would be two different games in the catalog with the exact same name.

Lone_Scout: There are. The two Monolith games
Worse:there's three "Monolyth" games and there is also a publisher named Monolyth (or maybe was, but we're talking about games preservation, so..)

tremere110: So basically a Jesus who preferred Old Testament dad to New Testament dad.

Mordimer Madderdin

tremere110: Does not roll off the tongue at all.
Quite like the original real-life one, Tomàs Torquemada, but with a different letter.

Well, that's a strong political statement. Be more progressive, mr Space Marine. We're in 2.024K already

Breja: It's been 14 years since I last read one of those books... it's fair to say my enthusiasm has waned considerably. And even back then they were pleasant enough time wasters, but nothing close to the Witcher (always an inevitable comparison). I guess I still harbor some residual curiosity about it, but not too much, as the game doesn't really look great in it's own right.

Sidenote: The trailers are in 480p? Really?

Breja: I seem to remember it's implied in one of the books that Jesus did die on the cross, and then his body was possessed by the Devil to do all the bloodthirsty stuff. Of course that idea is considered the worst kind of heresy.
(Apologies for little offtop) I know it's unpopular opinion, but IMO Sapkowski is not only overrated, but also not even half as good as other polish fantasy writer from that period (90/early 2000) - Feliks Kres, his Sherer universe is way more intriguing, and next books in cycle did not deteriorate as in case of Witcher series (reading Lady of the Lake is a torture). As for comparing with Jacek Piekara's books - well, that;'s tough nut to crack for me, as I don't consider Sapkowski as someone exceptionally good in his craft. But for sure I would agree with you (other post) that making all those prequels to the Inquisitorial cycle instead of continuing the "main theme" is annoying. Sadly, this looks like a constant tendency for Piekara, as he has made the similar thing with Necrosis (never continued after first tome) and unfinished Szubienicznik (although he announced the final tome of that cycle, but it's "only" announcement)
This could be fun, wishlisted.
