Linux got removed on the PS3 after a while...
The almost full backward compatibility was only possible on the very first launch-PS3. Short time after (with the new revision) they was removing the PS2 chip which was able to play almost every PS2 game and most PSX games. Even 2 of the USB slots has been removed: In order to cut down on cost... as usual.
They tried to use a software-emulation which was not anymore allowing for full backward compatibility. With another revision even the PS2 emulation has been removed. In the end... the PS3 games was the only games which was always working and, with some luck some PSX games using a rather weak emulation.
So in general, Sony got a bad history of gimping their consoles over time, so it is no bad idea getting a launch-version.
In my mind, regarding quality, the first PS5 without revision had the best quality. Performance obviously is now better on the PS5 Pro, but at a price never seen before on that company and on every console the past 30 years.
Regarding cooling: The thing is, the first PS5 revision did not remove more heat per se, however... in term the fan is not working properly anymore (dust or other issues) it got more material in order to compensate for a lack of airflow. With the revisions, those basically can remove even more heat or at least the same amount, but.,. if the airflow is not working properly there is lesser material in order to compensate for a weak airflow. Ultimately, for Sony every new revision got cheaper at the production cost... in general with cutting down on material, removing the drive or improving the chip design.
Still, the price was not going down... and yes, Sony is now making a profit with every console sold.
The marketing strategy of the PS5 Pro is obvious: Sony was realizing that the big mass of hardcore Apple-fans is willing to pay almost any price on a phone they BARELY can afford. It means prestige to them and they are part of a bigger "social circle" which are using the same cool stuff. However, the customers are not willing to pay the most expensive piece available, because psychologically it means to them "i am not a Porsche-driver, i need to be one of those sheeps... at a midrange spot". It is not even good to buy the most expensive stuff if they are not part of a social community which is on the very top... for example somewhere in the management of a company. Those may need to use the most expensive phone because it is the status they are reflecting with.
However... Apple still want to overcharge as much as possible but without making anyone in the "midrange" feel that they can not afford it or that they pay to much. So they made the "flagship-models" the most pricey ever seen.... they go for as much as 1650 coins now and are not even providing more than 8 GB RAM (it is Apple, no need for it... according to the fans the OS needs half the RAM of any other OS). Anyway, this "flagship" is basically the important psychological-marker, so the sheeps got in mind "okay... if i pay 700 coins i basically am only midrange and this phone is almost a bargain". Now, indeed.... the "midrange" Apple phones are now being sold like never seen before... it is a huge marketing success and there is no other phone in such a high demand than a midrange- Apple phone. Yet, for what you get... this phone is actually expensive. There are other phones with way better specs... but according to the fans, the software is simply better than anything else. Ultimately, Apple is creating coins like mad and their fans apparently "hate money"... and enjoy to throw it around.
Now, what it got to do with Sony? Sony kinda is trying to copy this behavior. They had in mind, it seems, they should create some kind of flagship with a flagship price and then, the fans are gonna say "OK, this is to much for us... it is for Porsche-drivers only, kinda like the most expensive Iphone", lets stay on the midrange... the good small PS5 which is used by most of our friends of the same social standing. In this case... they are now even more happy buying actually overpriced "midrange" or even "entry level" because they now got the psychological marker telling them "be happy, it could become way more pricey if you are a Porsche-driver or comparable".
Not much different on GPUs. I mean, in order to continuously raise the "capital" of a company they need to increase the income year after year. But how is it done without increasing prices? Not gonna work, so prices need to be increased and because the coins are constantly "bloated up, which means the total amount is increasing every year" it is actually possible somehow. However, the customers need a new "psychological marker" which makes them believe "okay, i pay probably 700 coins but i am only midrange.... for the Porsche drivers they may buy a 2500 coin GPU... this is not for my social standing but 700 is well accepted and somehow i can still afford it.
I know, the chief of Nvidia was apparently cleaning toilets long time ago, so it was a lot of hard work actually becoming a wealthy chief. Yet, it does not mean that everyone can clean toilets and at some stage able to level up to a big-company-chief... this is actually a dream condition, if it works. Most of the people may clean toilets for so many years... they may grow old doing so and at some point realize "hey, i am still cleaning toilets and my bank account is still in a bad shape"... this is simply life... the real one.
