Back when the demo for this game released I did not play it. I booted it up but the controls were so intimidating that I did not manage to get out of the first room. Back then playing with a mouse was a novelty and mostly reserved for rts's and so I went back to playing Doom, Duke and C&C.

Now, years later I am so surprised by how much the game has to offer that I regret not learning the controls back then. At least I can say without any hint of nostalgia that System Shock is worth every penny. In fact, it is so good that the remake seems moot. However I do still think that it will be good in the sense that it will attract plenty of new gamers to this game.

With games of this calibre released in the 1990's is it any wonder that we expected so much more from the then future of gaming?
I found the cyberspace nauseating, had to stop playing because I was afraid of having to vomit. Pity, rest of the game looked interesting.

If you like System Shock, also get this, at least you're already accustomed to the controls.
System Shock 1 is indeed great.
And I played it back then with the original UI and controls ;)

I'm glad that I have enough gaming knowledge and experience to recognise that your recommendation doesn't work for me. :-)
(I love SS1 for being an atmospheric adventure with RPG elements - not because it's also a first person shooter)

Now there's another great game that needs a remaster. :)
Try System Shock 2 if you liked the first.
Controls are a bit more "modern". There are also graphics packs to slightly increase the visual quality of the game.
And it's also playable in multiplayer coop.
If you can overcome the controls, give the Magic Carpet games a try. I am surprised no one did a modern take on it, considering what modern technology can pull off.

Yes Magic Carpet screams "remake". Brilliant design and gameplay.
I missed the boat on this series, but then my name and the term "good taste" have seldom, if ever, been used in the same sentence.

I should give it another try soon. The first time I tried using the default controls for an authentic experience. WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. The constant back-tracking to the first healing station gave me a hand-cramp (there was a second one but I didn't unlock it yet) and the inability to quickly react to enemies shooting you from above off-screen was no fun. But again, a second attempt is warranted.
