I've never heard about GOG.com, can you tell me more?

I'd say GOG has had a hand in profiling what DRM-Free is for the general populace but seeing we're now a decade on with GOG I just don't think it'll ever be more than a niche genre. Even more so when you consider the new generation is growing up on F2P/GAAS mobile games so they're all well used to games disappearing on them entirely at some point in their life.
