Tallima: The download happens whenever it wants.
You sure? I thought it happened when the computer's network (or was it the computer itself?) was idle.

Mine DLs as soon as I boot up. And it hogs network traffic like crazy.

This is where I learned what I learned: http://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent-windows-10-from-automatically-downloading-updates/

Tallima: Windows 10 rebooted my computer without asking while playing a competitive multiplayer game. So clearly it's worse than ever before. (there is a setting, btw, to disable its rebootyfulness)
Is it easy to disable this or does it require lots of googling? In Windows 7, this never happens if you don't select the automatic option for Windows Updates.

So far, a few options required me to go a-googlin'. Some of the default settings are horrid.

The thing that blew my mind that most was that MS wants a credit card and a 50c charge to create a child's profile "just to make sure they're a kid." That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard in an OS. And I'm pre-Windows.

Windows 10 sounds like a real pain in the ass. In the end, it just doesn't seem worth it.

Based on privacy concerns, forced updating, hidden advanced options (so they are technically there for legal reasons, but no one knows where exactly) it probably is.

I wonder if they feel they can push ads through their OS like the 360 and XBone and think they will make more money overall that way vs paying customers (Which would make sense if 90% of copies aren't bought).
It is a nice OS in many ways. It's also a PITA. I'm hoping that with a little time, it'll get better.

The OS makes me feel violated. It does things that it should need my permission to do. Namely, minimizing a game I'm playing (and it screwed it up, too) in order to let me know that I can try Office 365 for free for a limited time and kicking me out of a game and shutting my PC down for an update.

Those events were radically uncalled for. And if they are still going on when my license expires, then I'll likely be going Linux. I want my kids to use Windows 10 b/c that's what they'll likely use at work, but if it's not working, then it's not working. Time will tell.

Overall, I'm pleased enough to keep it instead of Win7. It took some work, but what new OS doesn't? But I'm also keeping it with the expectation that they fix this garbage.

tomyam80: I wish I knew, I hv been getting a few 'auto' reboots the past few wks due 2 the updates while I was surfing the net & the sudden closure of the windows & subsequent restart are sure getting on my nerves. I wld rather they just prompt u 4 updates via the notification on the bottom right corner & let u choose when 2 do the updates.

JMich: It shouldn't be doing that. I do get notifications about updates requiring to restart, with a suggested restart time of 03:00, and an option to schedule a restart (or restart now). Granted, I am on Win10, but Win7 would also tell me that there are update available, and if I'd like to install them. Don't recall ever having a reboot forced on me on all my years of using Windows.
Well, I did c the notifications a couple of times but I'm pretty sure there were also a few times that I didn't get any prompt @ all b4 the restart occurs automatically. Maybe it cld be due 2 me failing 2 c the notifications or perhaps I saw but ignored them.

However, my main pt was that I wld hv preferred it 2 be less intrusive & let me specify exactly when I 1 those restarts 2 happen instead of a 'passive' notification that restart will happen in 3 mins. This as I mentioned earlier wld prevent the auto-restart had I failed 2 c the nofication (due 2 been over-engross in whatever I was doing or any other reason otherwise) or had I saw the noticifations but 'conveniently' ignored them 4 whatever reason as well.
