I remember other products have them but I don't remember them being popular for games. I don't think cost was an issue.

Was there a technical reason for it? Why would it apply to games and not movies for example?
Never seen dual sided DVDs. What year was that a thing?

I would guess that by the time games got that big, there were more cost efficient ways available.

They were out at least early 2000. I will try and find an example.

Weren't many 5-8GB DVD's dual-layered instead? That way you didn't need to flip the disc over.

Edit: In theory you could have dual-sided, dual-layered (2x 8.4GB = 16.8GB) but by the time we had games of that size on a regular basis, PC games stopped coming out on disc (and consoles switched to 25-50GB Blu-Rays).

That might be it.
Coincidentally I had found one of those double sided discs from a magazine boasting it's 9GB size.
It's sad they aren't made anymore because they were really handy for having a lot of useful material in the one place and as a mini archive of that time period.

Well, I`ve seen them mostly in gaming magazines, like Gamestar and so on.
They used dual sided and dual sided double layer DVDs.

Don't you think there are handier ways to store a lot of useful material in one place these days? I have a 128GB (or is it 256GB) USB stick right here.. and a 256 GB SSD taped to the lid of my laptop. If that's too big, well, there are microSD cards with more storage capacity than any DVD you can find (admittedly these little bastards are slow, but hey, optical discs aren't particularly fast either).

I recall only films being dual sided: full screen / wide screen. Anything else likely dual layer. If we never saw something it was probably due to the expense/cost.
Because PC Gaming got the Steam cancer, that's why.
