Can anyone here remember an older, 2d WWII game, you can play missions or against another player, German or Allied. Before the game you have "slots", up to 20 or more depending on game options as I remember. And in each one you can play a squad of soldiers, riflemen, machine gun, bazooka, 8" mortar, 15" mortar, you can also put a tank or artillery (but artillery can't move when you place them in game).

Before the game you and your enemy "place" each squad within a small box where you start the game. And when the game starts your troops can be moved, you click on them and a green "line" appears and you click where you want them to move, and also whether running or crawling, but if they are fired on while running obviously they get cut down, or get "pinned down" and go into crawl mode. Also the "green line" you get when moving forces also applied to shooting, once the green light was "dimmer" it meant your range wasn't as good/something was partially blocking line of sight.

The game was all about cover, placement of forces, and pinning down enemy squads, and if it helps the game sounds of the gun sounds were deafeningly loud, like you could turn your sound right down to almost nothing and they were still loud.

Anyway, can't remember the name, years since I remember playing it, but damn it was awesome.
Sounds like the Close Combat series to me
That's it, thanks man.

Wouldn't be a bad series to see on GoG.
CC would undoubtfully be a wonderful addition to GOG's catalogue. The issue is, Microsoft has yet to join our glorious GOGolution.

Speaking of WWII games, these I also would be delighted to see here (the chances of that happening seem to pretty slim, though) :

Just imagining Age of Empires I+II+Expansions, and Age of Mythology, on GoG, is a good thought.

Actually it is not clear that Microsoft owns the Close Combat series anymore - Matrix games distributes updated versions of each game in the original series. However, I don't know if Microsoft retained the rights to sell the originals.

It seems a little expensive to me - even considering the updates and additions Matrix games has made - but they seem to have the rights to the series now. In some ways it is sad that because they've essentially done "Special Edition" versions and are selling them far above GOG's price points (even the new price points GOG is going to introduce at some point), it may be a long, long time before we see them on GOG.

They were great games. I loved "Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far".

I've always been a bit perplexed by Matrix games' prices in general. They seem awfully high in many cases, often costing more than a brand new AAA game would cost. And their high prices is the reason why I never buy any of their games, even though many of them look interesting.
I do realize that their target audience probably is a bit older, and has more disposable income than me (they probably target the same group that plays hex based wargames, i.e. men in their upper 30's or older), and not poor university students with a working class background , and that is probably why they can sell their games for as much as they do.
Hmmm, I wouldn't mind paying just for one of them I guess, the fact that they have "rebuilt" the original games, and made them compatible with Win7, seems good enough, and I've spent greater amounts of money on games before.
I still have a disc of Close Combat around somewhere... *looks through piles of cd's*
Actually, the original games are included as well...you'll get two different start ups, one for the remake and one for the original. So you can still play all the mods available for the originals as well.

Atomic Games was the previous dev to control the license, but I'm not sure if it's Matrix or the current developer (Strategy3Tactics) who hold them now.

That's cool - it's classy when publishers do that.

I *think* Matrix games is still the publisher though Strategy3Tactics is the developer, but I'll admit I'm not sure.
