Hi, I'm searching games in the vein of Rage of Mages, Evil Islands or Hexplore, RPGs but with gameplay and UI from strategy games.

Have you played Icewind dale? It is a CRPG with a strong tactical element. Another possible game that you might enjoy is Jagged Alliance 2 (which is more of a TBT with CRPG elements)

See if you can find a copy of this game. I almost bought it on eBay for a dollar, but decided the shipping was too costly.

New World Computing made a similar game too. I can't remember the name, but it lets you build golems to defend the castle. I'm sure the name will come back to me once I wake up after a good night's sleep, but my mind's too clouded right now to think properly.

How about Spellforce or Dragonshard here from GOG? I can't vouch for them though, I was always hesitant to try them because so far Rage of Mage has been the only RPG/RTS blend that worked for me and I've never found another RTS-type of game that I liked ...

If you're not limiting yourself to PC then the Final Fantacy Tactics series is pretty good - I had Final Fantacy Tactics Advance on the GBA and thought it was ace!
They are turn based statery rather than RTS, in case turn based isn't your thing...

If we are going into the domain of FFT-like games, did they not release parts of the Langrisser (Warsong) series on PC? I don't know if they can be found in English though.

FFTA is ok, it's pretty much FFT-lite though.

the original and Tactics Ogre are much better.

I think Dragonshard has very low RPG component, SpellForce is a good game but I don't want base building. What I want is something like Commandos but with a non-linear open world, like in those games that I said.

Fallout Tactics then? Not played it myself but sounds like the kind of thing you want...

Also the XCom games have some RPG-like and 4X like features in with the turn based squad stuff
