Is the file in 'Read Only' mode?
If you are on Vista or Win 7, it's probably UAC stopping you from editing a file in the Program Files directory. There are a couple of ways around it; you could simply turn of UAC, or if you don't want to give up it's (debatable) additional security, you could run Notepad as admin then open the file for editing (right-click notepad.exe, select "Run as Administrator", then use the file menu in Notepad to find and open the .cfg).

Go to properties in the notepad file and make sure all users have all permissions.

This worked in allowing me to change the file, but still no widescreen on the game.

Anyone know anything about getting this game to play in widescreen resolutions?
I followed the same instructions you did and it simply worked. I am on XP, so that might make the difference. It might help if you gave us some details, like system specs and the settings you are trying to use.

1366 x 768 resolution.

Here's my specs:
OS: Windows 7 Basic.
Processor: Intel Celeron CPU 900 (2.20GHz).
RAM: 2GBs.
Graphics Card: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family (aka shitty integrated chipset :P ).
The WSGF solution worked for me a while back on Windows 7... Windows would have nothing to do with it.

Like most ini solutions and hacks you are probably just doing something wrong. Start over and carefully go through the WSGF solution step by step again.
This is worth a try. You may be simply editing the wrong file. But you probably tried this method already since it was you who asked the question in that thread.
It's not UAC, as far as I know. Switching it off won't make any difference. Vista and 7 just have a really anal thing about editing files in the program files directory. This is why I almost never install anything there.

There is, however an easy way to do it. You can't edit the file and save it in there, but you can overwrite the file by copyin over it. So here's what you do.

1. Copy the config file somewhere else (your desktop, for example).

2. Open the file in the new location, edit it, save it.

3. Copy the file back into program files, choosing to overwrite the old one.

4. ...

5. PROFIT!

That should do the trick. It's what I've always done (when for some reason I had installed to Program Files rather than somewhere else) and it's always worked.

Thats the first thing i tried, but there's no folder for the game on that directory.

I'm gonna try it again later and will post back what happens, maybe i was just tired last night and got something wrong.

Thanks!

Shiek2005: OS: Windows 7 Basic.
Out of interest, how did you get Basic in the US? It's apparently not sold in Western or Central Europe, North America, Hong Kong, Australia or Saudi Arabia.

Oops, sorry, your right (guess that shows how half asleep i was yesterday).

I have Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit).
Thanks a lot for the help everyone.

seta r_mode "-1" was set to 6, setting it to -1 fixed the problem.
There is a cool mod for Alice on moddb, that enhances the graphics a bit, you should check it out.
