I'd like to fly the flag for a Swedish animated film; "Resan till Melonia". It was translated Norwegian and aired on Norwegian television when i was a kid. We taped it (VHS), but the tape is gone and i can't find the Norwegian version ANYWHERE on DVD. :(

The film is an ABSOLUTELY fantastic re-imagination of Shakespeare's "The Tempest". One of the finest animated films I've seen.

Granted, this one is hardly an insider's tip:

But suitable for those of you who don't speak German ;)
There are many Russian (well, Soviet, actually) classic movies that I'd recommend to watch to a foreigner. Most of them are virtually unknown of the ex-Soviet countries. There's a lot of our mentality in them.
I suppose they could find their viewer now, when many are tired of Hollywood-style movies.

"Heart of a Dog", for instance, based on a novel by Bulgakov, filmed shortly before the USSR fell, is a satire on Bolshevism.

Another one, "Kin-Dza-Dza" is about two people who accidentally found themselves on some post-apocalyptic planet, which is really a parody on our own society. There, money rule everything, some people are "more equal" than the others, the government is based on corruption and doesn't really care about its people.
Filmed in 1986, it became more actual in modern Russia, for obvious reasons.

By the way, the guy who played Fiddler became a director of the recent movie with Milla Jovovich.

As for the modern Russian movies, most of them are crap.

Yup!

BBC2 and Ch4 here do occasional "seasons" of foreign films. Most are quite good. Saw a Russian (or ex soviet, anyway) one, semi autobiographical I think, "My Life As A Dog". was excellent. Then there's the Swedish Ingmar Bergman films, also excellent. The German "Lola Rent" or "Run, Lola, Run". I could be here all day naming hundreds!

Edit : German film - bad memory. "Lola Rennt"? not sure "Rent" is the right spelling, anyway.

I can't believe I'm the first Australian in here, I was sure someone would beat me to posting Razorback

Aside from the trailer being very funny in that sad 80s horror movie kind of way, its a movie thats about a giant killer pig, how can you NOT love it? You can beat the bad guy then have a ham sandwich for lunch.

Or if you're after something sillier, you can watch this review of Houseboat Horror which seems to be as scary as it sounds
Here's an oldie, but it's a bit of a classic.

Log Driver's Waltz (Get's more interesting 40 or so seconds in.)

Oh wait... A movie. :P

The most known Brazilian movie is probably Cidade de Deus (City of God). A good movie, though I don't think it deserves it's 19th spot on IMDB's top 250.

I guess that's due to shock value for foreigners (for us, what that movie shows just isn't shocking anymore). If you ask Brazilians, though, I guess most will say their favorite Brazilian movie is Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad), either 1 or 2.

Yes, they're also about crime (we hardly get any international level releases about other subjects) in Rio, but from the viewpoint of the police. Many thought the first movie was a right-wing propaganda, and so it wasn't shown as much as CoG outside the country. But if you keep in mind that it just depicts the policemen opinions and how they were shaped, not really showing them as right or wrong, you might enjoy it much more. And then the sequel clarifies everything.

Also, they're action movies as much as they're dramas, which was a welcome change of pace in Brazilian cinema.

So, these are my most recommended Brazilian movies. But enough of that, here's a classic scene from the first one:
*Don't forget the closed captions.
