This was news to me,so it might be to others as well.

The X-Com UFO Defense "Extender" mod has been ported to Terror From The Deep. It brings with it fixes to the base game (fixing the research bug among others) along with tweaks from the UFO Defense Extender such as reorganizing the troop order, setting up a starting base layout, equipment memory, and other small things. Every option can be toggled off or on to suit your gaming style.

I'm not big on the TFTD modding scene (I actually never played it before now) but I'd always heard it never received the same modding support UFO Defense had. So now you can play both X-Com and TFTD with virtually the same mod.

Good to hear; I remember that research bug being deeply terrifying D:
Unfortunately, just like with the original X-COM Extender/Loader program, this only works with the Windows version of the game, not the DOS version sold from sites like GamersGate (which is the version I have).

Have you looked into the game's folder? The package comes with both the DOS and the Windows version (TFD folder, both XP-patched and unpatched).

Yeah, research bug was such a pain in the *a*s*s*... I still remember how frustrated I became when I realized that I will not finish the game because I researched in a bad order...

Huh? Am I just hallucinating? Because I swore I saw this under the description for the TFTD Extender on the first link that the OP posted:
NOTE: This program only works with the Windows version of TFTD (usually referred to as the Collector's Edition or CE). It does not work with the DOS version as the offsets and memory handling are different.
Edit: I realized you were talking about the GamersGate package - wow I must have missed that completely!

I was googling for any news of a TFTD Extender not long ago, and was saddened to see there was no progress on the UFOExtender either. I was afraid the project was getting deady.
Great news, i'll definitely check it out and spread news over my xcom-fan friends!:)

Does it apply to Steam version as well?

Yes, I think it does, as IIRC the version sold on Steam is the Collector's Edition which runs on Windows.

It does work with the Steam copy. It's the only version of X-Com and TFTD I own.

Hm, I'm not getting the .ini file. I really like the UFO Extender (which works just fine with my GamersGate version), so I'd like to use this too. Earliest real games I remember playing.

Sorry about that. I put a note on the entry pointing out this is a patch and those that don't have v1.05 will need to install that first then use the patch. I have done this so that people who have already installed 1.05 and tweaked their INI file, don't have to do that again. Sorry about the confusion. This may not be as important now but in the past there were a lot of reported problems and I was releasing fixes on a weekly basis.
