So, I've finally gathered enough capital to be able to go and visit Germany, Münich in particular. So I'm wondering if you have any recommendations about where to visit and what to do, I'm all ears :)

The trip starts in june :)

I can give you some tips, but it would be helpful to know how much time you will have. Also, are you planning to go to any other places beside Munich?
I hope there are no Bavarian people here, but:
Munich is not Germany :) Bavaria is it's own country *gg*

only was there once and have no memories of areas that are a must to visit, but I am sure, there are others who can tell you.

If you ever go to visit Hamburg, I can tell you a lot of great places to see ;)
Well you are a bit too early for the Oktoberfest (which is actually in September and not October). But still there are some places to visit, although I have to admit that even I don't know the general tourist spots. I would really recommend buying a tour guide (booklet). There is also a city bus tour available.

The subway is quite expensive, so you should purchase a ticket for the whole week. Most of the ticket booths are available in English as well.

As for sightseeing, I don't know that many good places but Munich is the only German city which has an old and a new Pinakothek - like an Art Museum. We got a lot of Museums btw. and also a National Theatre, Opera, or Concert (Philharmoniker).

You should at least go the Marienplatz - it's right in the center of the city and watch the clockwork at the major house (sorry for my English, I don't know all the words by heart). Then there a few more churches and the Hofbräuhaus if you like beer :)

You could also take a stroll in the Englischer Garten or the Olympia Park and drop into the BMW Museum. Or even go to the Allianz Arena if you are into football.

Hope that helps. Have a fun time in Munich!
Drink all the beer possible.

Definitely that at least. The main recollection I have of Munich was just that, IIRC I went in the evening and in the day, quite an interesting spot, plus very walkable.

And eat a Bretzel. :)
(Schnitzel is also not wrong and the mustard is sweet...)

If you have really a lot of time and like technology: there is the national technology museum in the city. No admission but they close quite early.

Could you describe what you enjoy to do? People are very different, as are their interest, but Munich usually offers something to everybody.
If you are interested in Culture, Museums, etc. Munich has quite a lot to offer...

The most famous ones are probably the "Alte Pinakothek", "Neue Pinakothek" and "Pinakothek der Moderne".

The "Alte Pinakothek" has famouns paintings from the "old masters" ca. 13th to 18th century. The "Neue Pinakothek" covers the rest of the 18th and the 19th century. The "Pinakothek der Moderne" focusses on modern art.
On Sunday all Pinkakotheken have a reduced admission fee of 1€. (Actually on Sunday the admission fee to all state owned Museums in bavaria is 1€).

There is a great number of art museums in Munich, if you are interested in that kind of stuff.

As mentioned before, if you are interested in technology, the "Deutsches Museum" (German Museum) is the world's largest Museum of Technology -- it is much too big to see the entirety of it on a single day.
Unlike stated above, admission is defenitely not free and the museum is not state-owned -- no reduced price on Sundays. Tours are included in the price -- some of them are (depending on the tour guide) very interesting, I recommend the one where they show their scanning electon microscope. I don't know if they offer tours in english.
The museum also has two external branch museums, one covering automobiles and one covering airplanes.

Schloss Nymphenburg (Nymphenburg Palace) built in the 15th century is a baroque palace (was the royal summer residence), which can be visited -- and it has a beautiful garden (including a botanical garden if you are interested in that kind of things).

The Residenz (royal palace) in the middle of the city also can be visited.

I think that covers the most famous cultural attractions in Munich...

I have visited Germany previously once around the area you are heading to: It's a very lovely country

Just remember that it can get really hot over there at times, especially in the summer :)

I'm sorry for you :P
Greeting from "Saupreussen" North Rhine-Westphalia ;)
I think Xonea covered up the most important things.

And by the way: drink lots of beer, it tastes great and it is not so expensive like in Finland - was pretty shocked of the prices in Helsinki and Tampere.

You should check out the Wirtshaus in der Au (http://www.wirtshausinderau.de/home_en.php). We take all our english speaking friends there, when they visit. Good food, great beer and an authentic atmosphere without beeing a tourist trap like Hofbräuhaus or all the other restaurants around the Marienplatz.
Plus, they got an english menu, not common in Germany.
You might also want to have a look around the Munich-Subreddit here: http://www.reddit.com/r/munich

Have Fun :)
Thanks for the suggestions!

Now, I hope the ash cloud won't get any bigger...
Taste the beer and ask in stores about swiss chocolate.

Oh, don't dare to walk around with a foreign soccer shirt (1860 Munich falls also in that category).
