I just did a check to see if any available updates were available...

I get a NWUpdate message box telling me

"The new package "New Mass Effect Mission: Bring Down the Sky" is now available for download.

Made be chuckle.

Next it tells me about the package, "Sonic Chronicles Unveiled in Nintendo Power!"

If you have GOG's version, I think it's already fully patched. If not, well, they discontinued support for the in-game updater. You have to go to the site to download it.

I've read a Bioware dude confirming it was already patched up on the NWN 1 section of the Bioware Social forums.
Actually, the GOG version is not quite up to date on the patching. You'll want the NWN: HotU Critical Rebuild which you can find here:

http://nwn.bioware.com/support/patch_english_hotu.html

If you can visibly see cloaks and capes on characters after equipping them, then you'll know the patch installed correctly as that is one of the many things the Critical Rebuild does.
Don't know if you really need or want the Critical Rebuild, but I thought i'd throw the link out there just in case.

Definately need that critical rebuild patch. The gog version patch is fucked up on many levels.
From what I understand the game will appear patched to the latest version already when downloaded from GOG. So running the built in updater wont probably help.

Because the updater will not find that some files are missing. It will probably just confirm that it is already the latest version (without realising there are files missing).

Instead you need to download and run the Critical rebuild patch file from the original Bioware site. That will make sure most (if not all) files are there.

You can say GOG should probably include this as a routine for installing.

@OP:

its the newsletter... it will download a text file with "latest news" and then run it. it will actually download a whole bunch of those from over the years. on a clean install of NWN platinum edition It would download bioware_newsletter_issue32.txt through bioware_newsletter_issue48.txt
this is platinum edition though, so it should get a few less of those I think.
