You know what that means... Roche or Iorveth.

I'm playing Witcher 2 for the first time, and with the added background knowledge of the books, I try to roleplay Geralt. I had played the first game again after reading the books, and kept as neutral as possible (but made almost the same choices as in my first playthrough).

Now this choice is really not easy. I've heard elsewhere that playing with Roche first spoils less for the other path, than the other way around. And I plan eventually to go the other path too. But this is just a minor concern.

So far I've come up with the following:

Both are reckless bastards when it comes to achieving their goals. Both are (probably) remorseless killers of women and children. The Scoia'tael have a little bonus for their tragic history, but Roche on the other hand is at least a very loyal man doing his job. So no help here.

(My) Geralt's current goal is going after Triss ASAP. Secondary goal is clearing his name. From the current situation it seems that the Squirrels are a more straight way to go after Letho, while Roche will draw Geralt into politics and intrigue - something he would surely try to avoid. On the other hand siding with the Squirrels who helped the Kingslayer will make "clearing the name" rather hard, but worse, it might force Geralt into fighting against humans (and not just the obvious bad guys there), the people he should be protecting.

Does this about sum it up? Any other thoughts? Which decision would you find more fitting for Geralt?

And no spoilers, please* :-)

Well, you will eventually need to play both paths to get the full story. So don't worry about this decision TOO much.

My first time I went with Roche, but that was before I read the books, so I'm not sure if it's really what Geralt would have done. This was mostly because I really didn't like Iorveth... he's openly racist, makes no apology for wanting to kill all humans, plus he attacked Geralt and Triss when they arrived. Also he was working with the Kingslayer, who I was very angry with not just because he framed Geralt, but also because I liked Foltest and was upset when he was killed. At that time I'd only read the first story collection (The Last Wish) so I only knew about Foltest from the very first short story, where he seemed like a decent guy.

Having read the whole series now, I'm not sure Geralt would really have cared about Foltest so much, and while he would certainly be angry about getting framed for murder, he would probably want to get at the Kingslayer for personal reasons rather than for Foltest's murder in particular. Still, he would need to accept help from either Roche or Iorveth in order to go after Triss, and it's hard for me to imagine him wanting to go along with either of them.

So that probably doesn't really help you much, sorry! It's a much easier decision to make in retrospect, but it's impossible to know what's going to happen ahead of time, so you just have to choose. Since you've asked to avoid spoilers, I won't tell you which path I think ends up fitting Geralt's character better. Just try to pick one, and keep roleplaying Geralt as best you can. You can keep the save file here so you can go back and try the other path after you finish the game. It's definitely worth trying both paths.

Enjoy! It's a great game. Chapter 2 is really cool, no matter which side you take.

Many thanks for your reply. I'm eager to play on, although it might take a few days until I get the opportunity. Family and work...

I've marked your question as the solution, because it confirmed my feeling that it's effectively choosing between two evils (with no clear indication which is the lesser one). And also, you were the only one to answer ;-)

I flipped a coin in the end, and Roche it is for now.

Thanks again for your answer.
