I started the game a couple of days ago and happen to be running into the very same problem.

If you are playing the game with german language, try this fix:

https://www.the-witcher.de/dlfile--id-284.html

For some reason, the game sometimes crashes when there are umlauts displayed on screen, like in dialogue subtitles or at merchants.
The fix changes ä/ü/ö to ae/ue/oe, which obviously isn't the best way of fixing the problem, but so far it works for me.
You can of course also switch to another language.

There is, however, this message board post from a german player, for whom the fix didn't work.

See this discussion:

http://extreme.pcgameshardware.de/rollenspiele-und-adventures/442043-witcher-2-crash-ohne-fehlermeldung.html

And while we are at it: What does CDPR have to say about it? Doesn't sound like a problem needing much work to get solved.

Apparently the umlauts aren't responsible for the crashs. It's the ß, which causes a memory leak. So user Psycho Dad came up with an idea how to work around that.
Honestly, I don't really understand how it works, but then again I'm kind of a noob when it comes to PC stuff.

Anyway, see this conversation:

https://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/threads/1512467-Neuer-Umlautepatch-Ursache-f%C3%BCr-CTD-s-gefunden

TL;DR

Install Psycho Dad's fix and the game stops crashing, plus umlauts are still umlauts and ß remains ß.
If your crashes are caused by the character bug, that is.
pretty strange. game was released long ago. it shouldn't be so bad with crashes
yeah it was never patched by the developers which is a little strange, because the crash is so easy to reproduce.

BTW my mod is also available on nexusmods and there is also explained how it works.

best regards
Funny thing is, a friend of mine played through the game some years ago, on Win 7 or 8, and he didn't run into any problems with crashes whatsoever. Go figure.
