I was on the quest to get Hattori to make swords for me and got into a battle with some baddies and repeatedly dies.

I'm level 18 and it said level 24 was recommended but we could do it.

Well, I didn't.

Problem is --- I < have > to have that guy make swords for me. From what I understand he is the only master blacksmith.

How can I reset this and try this quest until I get it?
Wasnt even aware you could fail this quest forever (as in it shows on your log as Failed) if it does, the only thing I can think of is reload a earlier savegame.

I completed this around level 15, just hang back and use signs and let the friendly npcs handle the heavy lifting.

In any case, you don't NEED this guy so early in the game, there is a good Armorer and a swordmaker in Oxenfurt that can handle anything until about level 30-ish stuff

Unless that "have to" is a compulsion of yours, its inaccurate. He makes master crafter swords but you can't use them anyway till you are level 29 I think. All the rest of the stuff can be made by someone else. There is no master crafted diagrams for anything below level 29.
You can't reset a quest, you can either load a save before you started it or run away from the quest area and come back later to continue it. (Assuming it doesn't automatically fail if not completed within a certain time period after you start it.)

You must be talking about those effing dwarves. They kicked my ass too. LOL. They wack you 3 times your dead. Don't let them surround you, you won't live long enough to blink. At low level, it's a gruelling task to defeat them. You have to have enough food for vitality. as you basically gonna have to engage them "hit and run". wack 'em twice then run, repeat. you;ll be lucky to hit them 3 times and run away without a 3rd of your vitality unmolested. So 2 strike move back away. At higher level when you have better ability it'll be easier. I like using mode 2 yrden. Just leave it near enough from them and it will suck the living daylight out of them.

Anyway, true. if it's already a failed mission the only way to play the mission again is to load an earlier saved game.

Since you mentioned you're level 18 I doubt it's already a failed mission (quest). when i played that mission at low level, it only let me play the first half and never let me do the second half until i'm one step closer to the recommended level.

Quen, poison, and hanged Man's Oil are your friends.
I did restart from an earlier save and finally managed to get the quest done. Threw a lot of bombs and used oil and let the NPC's do most of the work.

Still damn near died.

And, this quest seems to auto-fail if you don't get it done in a certain time or if you wander outside the area as you run away trying to heal up.

Really nasty quest.

Don't talk to Hattori when you're way too low level to do the quest... it says the level of the quest if you select it.

I mean, I know it's too late to be helpful now, but for anyone who hasn't done it yet, that's a pretty simple solution.

As I recall, I was doing a chain of quests and was sent to Hattori. I think they intended for us to meet Hattori but not finish his quest until we got further --- but I want to fill out my load of Griffin gear and need griffin swords and have to get them from him ( I think ). So I tried it.

I'm level 18 and, according to some of the internet explanations, you can do this at a lower level, so I tried it. I suspect whoever wrote that article was using some of the cheats that are out there because it was damn near impossible. Not so much because of the level of the boss we had to kill but because the NPC's helping him were even stronger. Some of them could one hit you or two at the most and while you were fighting the boss they came at you from behind and you find yourself dead.

Of course, a quest to gain access to a Master Blacksmith ( I think he is supposed to be the best in the game and can make stuff for you all the way to the top level ) < should > be difficult --- but GEESH --- that's ridiculous.

What made it even more frustrating was the fact you have to stay within a certain area and do it in a certain amount of time --- but they don't tell you that.

But I got through it and I'm moving on. :)

well. I did this quest being lvl 10-13 dont remember. on hardest difficulty. guys that were helping me were useless.
my attacks did almost no damage - but fire - hehe - fire damages in % of health so i used sword with 10% chance to apply burning effect. also i didint have problems with hattori dieing. strange

Arizona-Willie:
Wait, so you got a quest that required you to go to Hattori that wasn't specifically the quest to find Hattori and get him to make master quality weapons for you that specifically says it's for like level 24 or something? Hm, weird. I'm level 21 and in Skellige and haven't gotten any other quest about him. Where did you get it?

How can I reset this and try this quest until I get it?
1) Save the game as often as possible by doing a manual save through the main ESC menu (not quicksave), so that every single savegame is separate and you can go back to any previous state. Quicksave saves over top of itself blowing away every previous save that was quicksaved, making a ticking time bomb if your last save isn't good enough.

2) When a quest fails or any other thing happens that would permanently mar your game such as a bad dialogue decision or similar - reload the save game you made 2 minutes before that and try again.

If you have no save games prior to the problem happening, or they're too old and you don't want to redo everything since the savegame you'd end up having to go back to - chock one up to experience and save your game manually more often.

That's the only way to do it other than possibly installing a mod to enable a console in the game and googling up on how to issue console commands to the game. No idea if it has quest management commands or not as I haven't looked into that myself but I heard rumour of some console mod.
