russellskanne The GOG staff has stated it everywhere: that Galaxy will remain optional. I want to trust them. Therefore this request is supposed to be a reminder for the promise they'd made. This also includes the requirement that non-galaxy features won't be neglected, be it the up-to-dateness of offline-installers and patches or other concerns regarding the website- and account-functionality. Besides, there should never be a game requiring the client or profiting substantially from it's features (except multiplayer, chat and achievements).

UnholySaint For me programs like Galaxy will allays be spyware even above being bloatware. I am glad there is no Linux version as this ensures it can't be made requirement, at least for now.
pht Galaxy is not optional - if you want to do online, at least in some games. So, saying galaxy is optional is just lip-service.
SinDromX I love my GoG Galaxy but I love even more having my offline installers and being able to install my games anywhere, anytime, without any dependency on a third party software.

2p1k3 This is also favored by me. However, it is understandable that online games inherently are more protected than offline games. Playing games like World of Warcraft through Galaxy would be great to the distortion of mine. In addition, current games are becoming ever larger in file sizes. So it is also understandable for files to be partitioned into separate files that are 'unzipped' & installed after all files for the game are downloaded.

BavarinFleetfoot I especially vote for this due to the fact that my operating system (Linux) IS supported by GOG, but NOT by Galaxy, and despite the HUGE number of votes for a Linux Galaxy client, I have a sneaking suspicion it's just not happening. At least not soon.

ArilenaStardream Besides having old games, the fact that GoG Galaxy is completely optional and that the downloaded games aren't in some weird format only usable by their client are my top few favourite features of GoG <3. I certainly hope this will never change.

Hanglyman I like using Galaxy and it's very convenient, but definitely keep it optional for those who have DRM/privacy concerns or who want to install just their games without added bloat.

HiroshiMishima Like Kustuneae mentioned, trying to grab the non-Galaxy installers can be a pain. Some games have like 3-5 installers, then you have to grab the odd side-updates that aren't included with them.
I resisted Galaxy for a long time cause of the concern it WAS going to become basically Steam. I like Steam, but I didn't want GOG to be Steam. While they're not yet, thankfully, I still feel that I was mildly coerced into using Galaxy because the progress of grabbing any downloads or extras was streamlined more heavily for it.

alexwbc The only way to be DRM-free to core is being Microsoft/Windows-less. By design, WIndows (also Mac) is a DRM-OS. If you bound your business behind a DRM-OS (ie: you require a Windows license PC in order to work): you're not DRM-free anymore.
kitsuneae I wish the files for non-galaxy install were less cumbersone sometimes (I have games that took 6+ install files to play), but mostly I'm just glad not to have to use Galaxy just to play. Not everyone wants to deal with yet another specialized installer. Especially as installers invite DRM.

Mysteryman My gaming PC isn't connected to the internet to prevent some possible problems with it. So Galaxy isn't right for me. Don't mind downloading on one computer and transferring to the other.
Lucky-Mia Though the download Galexy option stands out more; there is still the option to install just the game without extra junk. I'm fine with this, as long as there is always a offline DRM free option, I am happy. Steam has a huge user base and has been working on their client for 10+ years. The steam client is what people love / hate in equal measure. Please don't become another steam. Many GOG users are here to avoid the Steam client, not check out a purple client.

hanshan YES optional until end of days not just end times, lol. I cant stand Steam's forced client and havent gone near it in years. My pc is managed how I want it, and my game library. I will wait for a game and forego it rather than use Steam. And they have no real customer service. I only have 350 gog titles and 350 wishlist, so not gonna get bored. I tried Galaxy client when it was newish and it started downloafing stuff Iwasnt ready for so I uninstalled it. I have space limitations and also a massive game library which includes all kinds of carefully researched info on each game, images, patches, etc plus lots of everything else and I am careful with my win registry and various win settings and config. Forced client of any type is an anathema to me.
I am GRATEFUL for GOG's Classic, manual option for game and patch downloads MANUALly - Jeez, GOG gives you a big blue dot in your library list, popup for the files list with description, & its just one-click, so whats the big deal? - I keep track with GOG of updates and WHEN I have time, bandwidth and space will download or update on my own.

I've used the client and have had many issues with it.
1) it does not even come close to recognizing all installed games, even the ones that use explicitly use Galaxy
2) it has broken as many games as it has patched because it cannot accurately determine the game version
3) When it can't determine the installed version of a game it has to re-download the ENTIRE freaking game
3a) it's nearly impossible to follow the patch scheme. Seriously, a version with multiple build numbers?
3b) Not all of us have unlimited bandwidth, GoG.
I have Steam games and GoG games. I prefer GoG. Connect is somewhat useful, but what it really does is drive me to purchase a game from Steam first. What does this have to do with Galaxy? I do not want another DRM (or even pseudo-DRM) another. Therefore, GoG, for the same reasons that I started using you in the first place, you are now driving me away from GoG and driving me at Steam. And that's dollars you aren't going to get.
Merranvo I have, and likely will never use the GoG Client. I have no interest in pointless things like Achievements, and even less in multiplayer.

LeeC2202 Interestingly, I was just following the link on Gamespot for the free Witcher game from here. To get it you had to install a game called Gwent and the only way you could have Gwent, was by installing GOG Galaxy. So clearly this is a situation where it is mandatory. I didn't know anything about Gwent but it appeared to be an online game, so that was an instant cancelled installation anyway. I don't know why they think everyone is happy to play online, I'm not. No disrespect to anyone intended but I have zero interest in playing games with a bunch of strangers. I have empty friends lists on all platforms for a reason, I don't want any online friends (or offline ones for that matter). So maybe this was mostly my fault for not knowing enough about the game I was installing but I don't want online, social-media, client nonsense.... I want games, nothing else.

Some of us power users appreciate being able to use our purchases without worrying about having to go online, worry about data caps, tracking, and all kinds of online bs. Not all of us want to join an online 'community', we're not interested in additional social interaction, we don't care about 'achievements' and other arbitrary stats, we're fine as we are.
Others enjoy that stuff - that's perfectly fine. Let Galaxy remain available for them. But leave it as an option, because there are plenty of us who don't. Many of us explicitly avoid using services like Hot Water Vapour precisely because of this.
Andtha I don't think that not reacting to the wish (as "in progress" or "completed") means that the client will become obligatory. As I understand it, there has to be other ways to get the game. For example, there still is no Linux client, so Linux games have to use the web page. The only thing that would make me leave, protest against and boycott GOG would be if updates to the games were only delivered through the GOG Galaxy client, but wouldn't be available as downloads from the web page. In other words: the web page MUST remain an alternative to the Galaxy client. ALWAYS. And, no, I couldn't live with having to use the Galaxy client to download the installers! That said, cuttently I don't see that this is acutally the case. I get my downloads from the web page (there is no client for Linux yet), including the Windows and OS X installers, and I don't see that there is a difference to the Galaxy client. Some patches came later to the web page, but they came. Let's hope it stays that way!

jswagner Galaxy is actually pretty great and really ties the service together, and I'm not at all confused about what 'optional' means here. I'd be happy even if Galaxy were the primary method for browsing the library and purchasing titles, as long as I could still easily download installers from within the client.
