It's an amazingly well-crafted love letter to the 1st and second generation of Pokémon games back in the 90s and 2000s, with the quality of life features expected from a modern game, and the creative strength and design thinking required to make itself much more than a Pokémon clone. It solves many of the design flaws and issues that Pokémon had (and some that it still haves, for the most part), featuring unique designs and assets made from the ground up as a totally unique IP, while still retaining the nostalgic feeling of the early generations in its beautiful pixel art design. The game released not long ago and is being constantly updated with new content, even featuring an alt region (tho I dare not leave spoilers here, so have fun seeing it for yourself :)
It's made by Yanako RPG's, the creators of the MonMae Engine, an rpg-maker-esque game engine for making monster taming games, the first of its kind.
The monster taming genre has finally taken off a few years ago and is every year making itself more unique and richer in experience and passion. We are at a point where people passionate about Pokémon from many years back, but who are disappointed at the current handling and state of the game franchise, can now have extremely fun and well crafted experiences in a much more open and prolific space.
Two years ago I was still playing Pokémon fangames, yearning for the franchise to be taken under better guidances, improve its quality and explore other design boundaries. Now I no longer feel the need nor want to touch any Pokémon game, because the current monster taming indie games are so much more fun and unique to me. I'm out of the toxic relationship, of feeling like the only place I could get a fun monster taming experience was in a franchise that, for me, did not want to explore boundaries and make games that I would enjoy playing.
If that sounds like you, then come along: a new world awaits. The world of Dokimon, and all around it, the world of Monster Taming
