Dungeon Master II: The Legend of Skullkeep

Dungeon Master II: The Legend of Skullkeep (1994)

by FTL Games, Interplay Entertainment, JVC Musical Industries, Victor Entertainment
Genres:Role-playing (RPG), Puzzle
Themes:Action, Fantasy
Game modes:Single player
Story:Dungeon Master established several new standards for role playing and computer games in general. Dungeon Master was a realtime game instead of the traditional turn-based approach that was prevalent until then. Instead of using text-based commands to interact with the environment, players directly manipulated objects and the environment by clicking the mouse in the enlarged first-person view. Abstract Dungeons and Dragons style experience points and levels were eschewed in favor of a system where the characters' skills were improved directly via using them. It also introduced some novel control methods including the spell casting system, which involved learning sequences of runes which represented the form and function of a spell's effect. For example, a fireball spell was created by mixing the fire symbol with the wing symbol. This kind of attention to detail and focus on the user interface was typical of the game and helped create an often captivating sense of craft and ingenuity. Other factors in immersiveness were the then-revolutionary use of sound effects to indicate when a creature was nearby, and (primitive) dynamic lighting.Show more

For a fan of the original Dungeon Master this is a win by taking everything from the original and taking it a step further in the presentation side. Unfortunately, the game arrived a little too late for a sequel to have an impact with so many similar games competing for player's time. I still have a boxed copy on my shelf and think a digital version may bring in some new fans to the series.

Not sure why there are two versions of this on here. Man, I loved this game. The friend I played it alongside and I nicknamed all the monsters since we didn't know what they were called, "mud puppies", "MINE!s", and of course Sandaldude the merchant. He was the coolest thing ever, being able to haggle with him, watching the character think about the offer, the fact that he'd give you the small change possible if you traded your money box. We loved the Sandaldude Stomp, the "dance" he did when you tricked him into buying tons of items, and he's animated to take stuff off the table and stash it in his inventory. THUMP THUMP thump THUMP thump thump THUMP. Finally an organized money box spun over to us. The strategy guide was great too; a narrative about the last party that almost won. With the beautiful joke that they made it to the end boss, suffered a near-total party wipe, and the cowardly wizard grabbed the bodies and fled. He was absolutely going to resurrect them but he deserved a night at the tavern before they stormed off to get revenge and save the world. And he got so drunk he forgot where he buried his teammates. Just a fantastic game.

god damn, i love this rainy weather, my golden trident, traders of the round table, walking in the sky, eating dragon steaks well done by a lightning storm, mixing my potions in the dark with broken legs, cheating a pack of wolves with a bone, crawling in the caves under the castle, there is something nameless and i can feel its presence. this is the best good old game of all time, and its absolutely shameful that you dont have it on the store called Good Old Games. maybe its too good for you, and we have to wait for a store named Absolutely Gorgeous Old Games. anyway, lets find it elsewhere and play, im trapped again :D
This was hands down one of the best RPG's on the market at the time of release. The story was fun the characters we intriguing and added a lot to the replay value. I spent countless hours making potions to level up while listening to music way to loud! This is a game that should be brought back so that everyone into retro games gets the chance to enjoy it.

Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun
Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal SunDungeon & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun is set in the world of Mystara, a setting of the Dungeons & Dragons game. The characters find themselves in a strange, red-hued world in which the horizon slopes upward in all directions, eventually vanishing into a crimson haze at the limits of sight. Their mission is to find and make allies in this new world or else the kingdom and its culture will perish. The player leads a party of four characters (either the default party or one that the player has created). Characters and races can be chosen from the normal D&D options. The gameworld is viewed from an isometric perspective and the characters can roam around in realtime. Battles are turn based. Like most role-playing games, the gaming experience focuses on exploration, inventory management and character development.

Shin Megami Tensei II
Shin Megami Tensei IIFifty years have passed since the hero of Shin Megami Tensei followed the neutral path, defeated the leaders of Law and Chaos, and founded a state where followers of both ideologies could live freely. But his reign of freedom doesn't last long. The Messian faith gains power, expanding the Cathedral into a new enclosed environment named Tokyo Millennium. The Gaians rise up, but their rebellion is repressed by the Messians' elite warrior class, the Temple Knights. People flock into the encapsulated city, submitting themselves to the strict hierarchy imposed by the Messian Center, where only the privileged living in the Center district are safe from demonic assaults. A few years later, a retired arena fighter Okamoto rescues a man named Hawk, who was fighting for his life against a demon. He trains him to fight in the arena of the Valhalla district, hoping that he would win the tournament, which will grant them both citizenship in the Center district. When Hawk succeeds, he is brought before a Messian bishop, and learns the shocking truth about his own origins and the role he is supposed to play in the grand scheme of events. A new battle for a better future begins. Shin Megami Tensei II retains all the gameplay features of the previous game. The player is able to summon demons, fuse them to create more powerful ones, make them participate in battles, talk to random enemies and receive information from them, etc. The combat is turn-based, and the player explores the complex, maze-like dungeons from a first-person perspective view. Like in the first game, the Law, Chaos, and Neutral alignments play an important role: during the course of the game, the player will have to make choices that influence the alignment of the protagonist, steering the storyline into different directions. New features include a "magic succession" system, which allows demons to carry over their original magic spells when they are fused into new ones, a few additional spells and abilities, and the possibility to play at the casino and win unique items.
