Honestly this whole series needs preservation bad. The first five games have never been translated, and only one remake and 3, 5, and 6 have ever been brought over despite this being a legendary franchise that has influenced Japanese gaming for years. This series is to Japanese gamers is like Rogue to western gamers, which is funny because it was also inspired by Rogue!
I've easily put in thousands of hours across all of these games. I've put 200 alone in this one and well over 300 in Tower of Fortune. It's so easy to pick up and play as well as just lose hours at a time in. I'd easily drop money for the entire franchise if it ever got properly translated and I'd easily double dip for the games I already own, including this one!
Serpentcoil was a classic throwback done right. Great, challenging dungeons, Heavy emphasis on item usage (similar to 2), an emphasis on defensive play (similar to 1), so many QOL aspects and additions from 4 and 5 as well, and dungeon layouts and designs based on dungeons from across the whole franchise. Even Asuka and Koppa are playable in this one. The gameplay references extend out to other Spike-Chunsoft Mystery Dungeon games too. Several mechanics from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (Which was spun off from this franchise) have found their way in here.
Genuinely such a good place to get into the franchise at and serves as a great jumping off point to get into the other games in the franchise. Genuinely a part of gaming history that's just not well known outside of Japan at all.
