Shogun: Total War (2000)

by The Creative Assembly, Electronic Arts, Sega
Genres:Strategy, Turn-based strategy (TBS), Real Time Strategy (RTS), Tactical
Themes:Historical, Warfare
Game modes:Single player, Multiplayer
Story:Set against the backdrop of the Sengoku Jidai (Warring States) period from the 15th to the beginning of the 17th century, Shogun: Total War is a real-time tactics and turn-based strategy game with a strong focus on historical authenticity. Players assume control of a daimyo (leader) of a contemporary Japanese clan and attempt to conquer the nation and claim the title of supreme Shogun, the undisputed military ruler of Japan. The gameplay consist of two parts – a turn-based Risk-style mode on a 2D campaign map of Japan where the player must recruit, manage and move their armies, conduct diplomacy, trade, espionage, sabotage and assassinations. This 2D map however ultimately serves to provide context for the 3D real-time battles that make up the main part of the game and occur whenever your army crosses into enemy territory or two opposing forces meet on the campaign map.Show more

It has a supreme battlefield-combat-simulation and you leading armies into combat (and fighting things out) feel too it - this in a way that later TW-titles never managed to replicate or surpass (with the possible exception of the original Medieval Total War-game). Overall it is an extremely well crafted game that knows few equals in terms of pure game-designs. Shogun Total War was real treat to play day 1 and it still is one of my personal alltime favorites in terms of both game-designs and provided game-experiences! Sadly, it’s fairly unknown - but it really is a diamond in the rough... GOG should totally try to get this game to their catalogue, whenever they can!

This was the first Total War game I played and it's also the one I spent most of my time with. Only Rome comes close but that was thanks to the mods. The game is quite simplistic when compared to recent titles but it is that simplicity that makes it so fun and addictive IMO. I already have it on Steam but I hope to see it here on GOG as well. Make it happen!

That game is sooooooo unique... one of the best in Total War series even though Original Rome Total War 1 and its expansions are Number One in this franchise...
Even with all his flaws this was my first Total War and the one with the best AI(for battles) that I have seen, it was capable of making human like tactics and knew when to fight and when not even using time in his favor or betraying an ally MID BATTLE if it saw the opportunity for a great victory. The map gameplay wasn't that interesting but since is very straightforward it is really good for quick campaings and game sessions.

My brother and I got an anthology pack of Total War games that included all the games that were out at that point with the exception of Napoleon. From Shogun Total War to Empire. Shogun never worked for us. Neither did Medieval 1. GOG, please, make them work.
This game was fun and challenging, yet not overly complex, and the live battles were manageable. While I have played the newer versions I could never really get into them and would have preferred this format instead of the one that replaced it. I also think that this would have made an excellent multi-player platform or even open world, for other eras, and think it would be preferable to Sid Meir's CIV series...bring it back please.
Those games also need your vote!
Black & White
Black & WhitePlay the role of a deity in a land where the surroundings are yours to shape and its people are yours to lord over. Be an evil, malevolent god and the natives will worship you with fear in their eyes. Play as a kind, benevolent god and they will worship you with love in their hearts. Your actions decide whether you create a heaven or hell for your worshipers. Then select a creature from the land to act as your representative in the world. Raise it to gigantic proportions and teach it to do your bidding--whether the animal grows into an evil colossus of mass destruction or a kind and gentle giant is up to you. Progress through the game's rich storyline performing powerful miracles to battle other deities and become the world's supreme god.

Pokémon Stadium
Pokémon StadiumIn the game's Stadium Mode, one player competes in 80 different battles, divided into four tournaments. Beat the Stadium Mode and you're in for a bonus battle against the ultimate Pokémon warrior, Mewtwo, as well as a secret mode that gives you 80 brand-new, and devilishly tough battles. There is virtually no way you can beat the secret mode without having trained your own, elite Pokémon. One to four players compete against each other or the computer in a no-holds-barred battle with customizable rules. You can select rental Pokémon for these battles -- but that makes them much too predictable since their selection of techniques isn't determined by the trainer. You can also select quick and easy versus and random battles.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6: Patriots
Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6: PatriotsTom Clancy's Rainbow 6: Patriots is a cancelled first-person shooter video game, part of the Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six series, announced on the cover of the December 2011 issue of Game Informer. It was to be published by Ubisoft, and was developed by the company's Montreal studio, with additional development by Ubisoft Toronto and Ubisoft Red Storm. Due to the death of Tom Clancy in October 2013, concern was raised that this game would become the last to bear his name. Ubisoft has since stated that they will continue putting Tom Clancy's name on future Tom Clancy titles out of respect for the late author. Patriots was cancelled in 2014 after it was announced in 2011. Instead, Ubisoft started development on a new Rainbow Six game called Siege.

Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty
Dune II: The Building of a DynastyDune II is often considered the first mainstream modern real-time strategy game and established many conventions of the genre. Even though set in Frank Herbert's famous Dune universe, the game is only loosely connected to the plot of any of the books or the films based from them. Controlling either of the three Houses, the player must fight a number of battles against the other Houses. In the early levels, the goal is simply to earn a certain number of credits, while in the later missions, all enemies must be destroyed. The single resource in the game is the Spice, which must be collected by harvesters. The spice is converted to credits in a refinery, which are then spent to construct additional buildings and units. There are two terrain types: buildings can only be constructed on stone, while the Spice is only found on sand. However, units moving on sand attract the large sandworms of Dune, who are virtually indestructible and can swallow even large units whole. As levels progress, new and more advanced buildings and units are made available, including structures like a radar station, a repair facility or defense turrets and, for units, various ground troops, light vehicles and tanks. Each House can construct one unique special unit, and, after building a palace improvement, can unleash a unique palace effect.

Black & White 2
Black & White 2In the game, the player takes the role of a god called from the void (nothingness) to help those who invoked them. However, the player is not an omnipotent style god, but rather a god who rises and falls with his believers and the player must help develop their nature according to their good or evil desires. The player also has a creature, their physical representation in the world, which takes the form of an anthropomorphic ape, lion, wolf, turtle, cow, or tiger. Its physical manifestation can grow to an immense size, and adopt a good or evil persona separate of the player's. They develop their character as the player rewards or punishes their actions. In addition to the god simulation and city-building elements introduced in the original Black & White, Black & White 2 also features elements of real-time strategy gameplay, with the addition of controllable warfare and fighting units.
