Skullmonkeys

Skullmonkeys (1998)

by The Neverhood, Inc., Dreamworks Interactive, Electronic Arts, Riverhillsoft
Genres:Platform
Themes:Action, Horror
Game modes:Single player
Story:Something has gone seriously wrong in Klayman's homeland -- Klogg, an evil megalomaniac, wants to destroy the land and basically rule over anything and everyone. Because the task can get difficult at times, he has enlisted the service of fearsome ape-like creatures, Skullmonkeys, to aid in the destruction of planet Idznak. Needless to say, it is up to the player to stop Klogg and his devious plans. Much like The Neverhood, Skullmonkeys is a 2D platformer built entirely of Claymation characters, enemies, and environments. Throughout the game's seven worlds spanning ninety levels, the basic objective of each is to destroy as many Skullmonkeys as possible. Destroying the simians can be done one of two ways: firing projectile weapons or butt-bouncing off their heads.Show more

The charming and challenging platformer sequel to The Neverhood that's been sadly forgotten by time. The handmade claymation art style and fun music make it an audiovisual delight as well!

I had Skullmonkeys on PS1. I didn't know until years later. This was a follow up to a game called The Neverhood. Some of those people later came back to make Armikrog. Which I recently gotten in a ridiculously huge Christmas GOG purchase. I'm a sucker for clay animation as a whole. One of my absolute favorite shows was MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch. I also grew up with a few ClayFighter games as well. This had to been the single strangest PS1 game I had growing up. The game is so unexpected as well as some strangely interesting. You quickly become curious to see what else is in the game. Virtually Skullmonkeys is a game I can't compare to many games. I always remembered the clay animation within the cut scenes. The usage of audio as a whole really sells you on this game. This possibly the weirdest platformer of the 90s. In all honestly, if you're a fan of The Neverhood, clay animation or want something different. You better believe Skullmonkeys truly delivers. I actually do believe this game would sell well on here. People forget the 90s had some rather unique stuff that always stuck with people.

Skullmonkeys is a fantastic jump'n run with super unique claymation graphics and a funny weird atmosphere. Like its predecessor from a different genre, this is an excellent game which definitely deserves to be preserved for eternity.
One of my favotire psx games. It was funny and weird at the same time. Clay animation was wonderful and the game was quite difficult. Back in those days I didn't know it was a sequel.
I just discovered the existence of this game quite recently from a Youtuber that I watch and now this game makes me really want it with its particular universe and especially with its artistic direction in stop motion (or modeling clay)

Shadow Complex
Shadow ComplexShadow Complex is presented in 2.5D format; the game world is fully three-dimensional, but the player can only move in two dimensions, simulating the environment of a classic side-scrolling video game. Enemies can, however, move in any direction, and auto-aim is utilized to allow the player to fire at nearby enemies or objects both inside and outside of the 2D plane. The player can use the right control stick to aim with a laser sight. Gameplay in Shadow Complex was inspired by Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The gameplay takes many cues from Metroid: the player can move freely throughout the expansive game world, defeating enemies with a variety of weapons, and as they overcome challenges, they gain new abilities and weapons which allow them to reach new areas. The game rewards the player with experience points as they complete objectives and defeat enemies. The player can gain experience levels, each level boosting basic attributes of the character. These experience levels grant the player skills such as improved gunfire precision or damage resistance. Special rewards such as revealing the full map and unlimited special ammo are granted at specific levels. When the player starts a new game, they will lose all the weapons and items that they have acquired, but will keep the character's experience level and any benefits they have already received from that experience. In addition to the main campaign, a number of challenge levels, called "Proving Grounds", are available, generally requiring the player to make it to the exit of a room using a limited set of items and health. Players are ranked based on time of completion and any scoring objectives when they complete the level. Scores and other statistics from the main campaign and the training group are tracked via online leaderboards. A remastered version and port was announced during the 215 Game Awards, to be released for PS4, Xbox One, PC.
